Tammy Copeland | 9 comments Looking for a book I think I read within the last ten years but it may be older. Heroine's father had died and her guardian is a lecherous family member possibly an uncle or cousin who accosts her. She hits him over the head and kills him. She then flees and ends up in an inn where she meets the head housekeeper at an estate who hires her as a servant. The night she arrives she sees the hero for the first time, he is drunk and ranting and I believe he shoots a chandelier or something similar. The next morning the head housekeeper ,who is not kind to the heroin, sends her up to hiroom with his breakfast because she knows he will be in a black mood...I can't really remember exactly what else happens. I do remember the head housekeeper is abusive to the heroine and also has a son who she wants to marry to the heroine. I belive she ends up running away because she thinks it is going to be discovered that she is a murderer. I would love to read this book again, hope someone remembers it.

CLM | 311 comments I assume this is historical fiction? Adult? YA? Set in England? It has kind of a Catherine Cookson feel to it but it doesn't strike an immediate chord.

Tammy Copeland | 9 comments Yes, Yes ,Yes and yes but I don't think it was Catherine Cookson.

CLM | 311 comments Could it be Runaway Bride? This is a favorite of mine, both book and author (sister of the better known Joan Aiken).

Tammy Copeland | 9 comments That is not the book but thanks for suggesting it. It sounds really good, I'm definitely going to read this one.

``Laurie (laurielynette) Could it be a Norah Lofts book?

Norah Lofts

message 7: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Copeland | 9 comments No, this book was not really written in Nora Lofts style. I am beginning to fear that this book was written by a one hit wonder author with a limited release.I have scoured the internet and have had no luck. It was a really good book though. I have even spent a whole Saturday reading through hundreds of book descriptions on Barnes and Noble hoping to stumble upon it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Megan | 10 comments It wasn't Melanie Dickerson's 'The merchant's daughter' was it? (I need to learn how to link to the books like some of you do. :) )

Here's the link for Megan's suggestion: The Merchant's Daughter by Melanie Dickerson

Megan, try clicking the "Add Book/Author" link above the Comment box. Then select a tab to enter either the Book or Author's name. I usually start with the more unique sounding name (book or author) - it can be faster with fewer results to scan.

Sometimes there's just too many book titles (say, you enter Barbara Cartland). Then I just use the Search at the top to locate the book's page, and copy-and-paste its web address in the Comment box.

Please let us know if you'd like any more tips. :)

message 21: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) To Catch an Heiress (Agents of the Crown, #1) by Julia Quinn - her uncle encourages his son to rape her and she hits her cousin over the head and escapes. She is mistaken for a spy by the hero and lives in his house.

Not exactly what you describe but maybe?
