Read this middle school around year 2000. The book itself was probably from the 80s.. for real this time! I know I say that in a lot of these but this book I'm pretty sure it is in fact older. I got it from the school library. Maybe had something about a tunnel in the title? Talked about going for the 'big sleep' and snuffing out you candle. Main character was probably a 14-15 yo BOY. Book was shorter IIRC <150 pages and was a little smaller than a normal paperback.
