Sera | 71 comments I know I am totally over thinking this but I am wondering how readers feel about it. Usually I only allow myself to read one book at a time. But sometimes after reading reviews or recommendations I get really intrigued by another book and want to start it right away. But if I am in the midst of another book already, which I almost always am I won't allow myself to start another.
How do you all feel about this, one book at a time or multiple at once? And if so how does it work for you? Do you just pick a few and start reading and then give each one equal time? Or stick with the one that grabs your attention and then move onto the others as you finish? Is it hard for you to keep the details straight when reading multiple books at once when your always switching back and forth?
I think I want to start allowing myself to read multiple books at once but wondering about other readers habits on this. Thoughts?

I always, always read multiple books at a time. Minimum of two, and a maximum of five. A lot of people ask me how I don't get distracted, but the thing is, I simply don't take it as a distraction. It's more like...a variety. I almost always make sure I'm reading different genres, like right now, I'm reading one fantasy, one humour and two contemporaries. It just gives variety. In the sense, if someday I wake up and feel like reading some gory bloody war scene, I'd take up the ASOIAF novel I'm on. If by the night I'm in the mood for some sappy romance, I'd read any of the contemporaries. That's how it works for me.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I've started doing the same these past few years. I have one non-fiction going, an anthology going, and at least one fiction at all times. Sometimes there are more than one of fiction, another of non-fiction as well, it depends.

message 4: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) Right now I am reading three--a novel and two memoirs. That doesn't count the book tucked into the door of my car, or the one in the necessary room. My biggest problem is going to the library and finding too many books I want to read. My TBR list is longer than Marley's chain.

message 5: by Sera (new)

Sera | 71 comments I am absolutely a mood reader so I think I need to just allow myself to read more than one book at a time so I have some variety and don't get bored. Thanks for everyones input :)

message 6: by Sangar (new)

Sangar Sdiq (sangarsdiq) | 34 comments I read one book only and stick to it until I finish it. But I don't think reading multiple ones can distract you. I read one book because I want to have all my attention on one book in which I'm interested currently. When I lose interest I don't quit reading it ( I may do it and give extra time to the other books if I read multiple books ). Because "I lose interest easily" :( . I think for someone who does not read too much (like myself) reading one book is better.

message 7: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 67 comments I am always reading multiple books. Switch as my mood switches

message 8: by Derek (new)

Derek | 4 comments I always read multiple books. Some of my friends and family suggest I get bored with a book when I move to another book. Not at all. I just like being part of multiple worlds at the same time. Plus, I find it keeps my mind sharp and focused.

message 9: by Maria (new)

Maria | 10 comments I too often want to read many books at the same time, thinking of what book to read next before I'm even halfway through a current book. Wanting to be part of it all. I've experienced though that doing one at the time works best for me, otherwise I might stumble on the details, mixing them up- it's not like other books are going to run away anyway. Still, always eager, but I guess after getting a Kindle it has become easier.

message 10: by Carl (new)

Carl Goodman (chasinggoodman) | 95 comments I'll read two books at once. But usually one is a children's book or nonfiction; something not so hard to read. Then on the other hand I'll be reading a classic at the same time. The worlds and writing always differ so much that you can do it. It's a bookworm's thrill ♫

message 11: by Tina (new)

Tina I can read one intense book. Two mysteries. A slow religious book (I keep going back and forth to the Bible and writing notes and praying) and maybe a "blah" book!

message 12: by Maria (new)

Maria | 10 comments Yes, I assume two completely different books, like Carl mention fiction vs. Non-fiction should work fine. Or as Tina mention, having a religious book to go back and forth to. Didn't think of that (answer before thinking: check)

message 13: by Carl (new)

Carl Goodman (chasinggoodman) | 95 comments Lol, yep :) Right now I'm reading Moby Dick and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It's actually not that bad lol

message 14: by Gabrielle (new)

Gabrielle (gabbilupe2012) | 144 comments I like to read at least 2 books at a time of i can ill resd more

message 15: by Carl (new)

Carl Goodman (chasinggoodman) | 95 comments I think you might like Feel Alive by Ralph Lauren. It's like 80 pages, very spiritual. The author is young too, about your age

message 16: by Thomas (new)

Thomas | 63 comments Well it doesn't bother me. Sometime when i get too bored with a particular book I'll be starting to read a new one. Then when i finished the new one I'll be reading the old one again because otherwise I'll be murmuring:"You're not finished with that book yet... You're not finished with that book yet..."as the days passed by.

message 17: by Tom (new)

Tom I have one on my Kindle going and one paperback. I also have 3 books of short stories. I usually have a hard one going. Like now I am reading something spooky for Halloween and I'm still reading The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall. I shouldnt say hard because its not , just not comtemporary.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I read multiples and have done so for the past few years. It still feels like a newer experience to me but I have grown fond of it. As example, I read non-fiction slowly so having a fiction to read at the same time is great for when I need make-believe breaks. I usually have an ebook going but can't read the book all the time and mainly read books, so I usually have one of them going. It just depends, but the multiple reading has been working well to avoid reading ruts too.

message 19: by Tina (new)

Tina I just can't do it. Seems like I have too much in my mind to squeeze two more things working at the same time!! I get them mixed up! LOL

message 20: by Tina (new)

Tina I see these weekly challenges and all the different books at different pages...How can you read 11 books at the same time? I want to enjoy my books I pay for not run a relay! Given 1 week to read as many as you can? Aren't there other things to enjoy in life besides 11 books in 7 day? Wow, must be an extra gene I don't have. And I love to read!!! I AM NOT CRITICIZING ANYONE. I am just amazed!! How !!!?? Must be the thrill like a race.

message 21: by Carl (new)

Carl Goodman (chasinggoodman) | 95 comments Haha! I am as shocked as you when I see certain women reading 10- 20 books at a time. It is madness!

message 22: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 67 comments Personally, when I have a lot of books currently reading, it just means I have put several of them aside for a time until I return to them. Maybe my mood changed etc... They are started so I don't take them out of currently reading status.

message 23: by Carl (new)

Carl Goodman (chasinggoodman) | 95 comments I see :))
I do that too! But I've never thought of it that way, book readers operate very strangely. Lol

message 24: by Lin (new)

Lin | 3 comments I have no problem reading several books at a time. I usually start one, read a couple chapters, start the second book and sometimes a third book, it is no different than reading a book about several families and I enjoy the different stories. I never get the story lines mixed. A lot of times I start a new book because I left for work and forgot the book I was reading. I always have books at work, in my car and on both floors of my home. I also have several books in my "currently reading" post on here, I have started reading most of them, some I list because they are the next ones I want to start reading.

message 25: by Tina (new)

Tina Wow, I wish I could do that. I do keep one in my purse for Dr. visits or while husband runs into a store. But can't do it at home. I do get the characters mixed up. Now I can read a book about a book in the Bible and a fiction mystery but that's about it. A admiral nod to your talents Lin!

message 26: by Karthikeyan (new)

Karthikeyan Murugesan (karthikeyan_murugesan) I need to read multiple books simultaneously. Mostly one book is very serious, dark and hard to read. The other one is light and funny. The contrast makes sure I don't get bored by either.

message 27: by Alexander (new)

Alexander Horsey (eternallibrarian) | 9 comments I can up to 10 books at once, and people don't understand how I keep all of the story lines straight. I carry 6 books with me, and people are amazed that a 15-almost 16 year old kid reads as much as I do.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I have tried this but I always reading more of one than the other so I don't think it really works for me. I usually have two going when it's on physical book and one book on my Kindle but that is rare as I don't purchase too many physical books. The only physical book I normally purchase are those by Jane Green, who I absolutely love as a writer.

message 29: by Malisa (new)

Malisa (jaygatsby) I don't do this much, but I've managed quite well whenever I tried. Usually, I read two books of different genres. That makes it less confusing. I have, sometimes, given up a book if I found the other one more interesting, but not very often. I've never tried with more than two though. Mostly, whenever I read two books at once, it's because I'm carrying the lighter one to school to read and reading the other one at home. Yeah, I know that's silly. :)

message 30: by Brittney (last edited Nov 24, 2015 06:19AM) (new)

Brittney I read many books at once. my problem is if I can't put one of the books down and if that book has other books to keep the story going. It means bad news for the other books I am reading! I have always read multiple books at a time because I used to have a short attention span and now I love reading different types of books so I don't mix the stories up!

message 31: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Schoolcraft | 16 comments Hi Brittany. The fact that you read multiple books at once, tells me you in love with the written word. As I am as well. I have three to five going at a time, and if one of them disappoints me, I throw it against the wall, then put it in a bag the next day, to drop off at Sally Ann. Nice talking to you. Brenda

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I normally vary between reading only one and reading multiple books at once. Especially during exams I read several books to always have something at hand I can handle at night. I don't know how I do it but I never get distracted or hardly confuse characters.
Personally it depends how captivated I am by a certain book. Right now I only want to finish it but last week I started two and wasn't satisfied with either of them so I pulled out a third one and finished them up by Sunday... I guess I'm a little bit of a moody reader

message 33: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Schoolcraft | 16 comments Indeed Saskia you are a moody reader. One good thing is your don't throw them.against the wall. Nothing worse than spending twenty dollars on a hard cover book and you cannot get into the story, or its just a stupid book.

message 34: by Ash (new)

Ash (ashthemagicbookdragon) I actually want to try reading multiple books at once. Now that I finished The Lunar Chronicles (I literally didn't want to think of anything else while I was reading it), I can get started on all the other books I've bought in the past couple of years and haven't read yet. We'll see how this goes.

message 35: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Schoolcraft | 16 comments It's definately like multi-tasking. The only time I stick to one book is if it's so good I take it places with me. Happy reading Ash.

message 36: by Cara (new)

Cara Achterberg (caraachterberg) I always have five going at once. I know, crazy. I have one in the car in case I have to wait somewhere for a kid. I have two by my bed to read at night - one that is complicated to read on nights I have time and one that is easy so I don't have to think too much. I have a nonfiction I read that is usually near my computer so I can tuck into it when I'm waiting for something, and I have one by the toilet because you know.

message 37: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Schoolcraft | 16 comments Wow.....so cute. You are a voracious reader Cara. I can identify with that. Isn't it awesome, living in so many lives at once. When you are looking for a great true life, memoir story, please read Alice Had a Palace. I guarantee a great read. Nice talking to you. Happy reading!!

message 38: by Arbaaz (new)

Arbaaz Khan (arbaazkhan1999) | 588 comments I want to ask a question, what would you do if you were not enjoying a book and then put it down for later on but then after a while ago you pick it up but confused wether or not to start from the beginning or from where you left?

message 39: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Schoolcraft | 16 comments Hi Arbaaz, yes that has happened to me before. You go back to the beginning, to try and make some sense of the whole thing, and to see if you missed something. I know the feeling. Hi, nice talking to you. Brenda

message 40: by Arbaaz (new)

Arbaaz Khan (arbaazkhan1999) | 588 comments Thanks brenda for taking the time to answer my question. But the problem is, the book i wanna re-read is kinda long. IT by stephen king. And also the vsmpire lestat by anne rice. TVL is mostly about 500 pages and i completed 81 or something. And IT was probably in the thousands. I completed only 80 or something.

message 41: by Trupti (new)

Trupti Praful | 1 comments I have until now read one book at a time. But I will surely love to do the multiple books reading some day. I don't feel it would distract me as far as I don't lose the track of the storyline.

message 42: by Cara (new)

Cara Achterberg (caraachterberg) I do occasionally lose track of the storyline, but a good writer will suck me right back in and it usually comes back to me. No time for boring books in my life anymore, so it's rare I can't find my way back into the story. I'd think that Stephen King would certainly be pretty easy to jump back in and he'd catch you up quick. I'm not an Anne Rice fan, so don't know about that one. Too many books on my list to re-read anything. It'd have to be pretty special.

message 43: by Madhu (new)

Madhu (Madhu LovesBooks) (madhu_lovesbooks) | 72 comments I can read at the most three books at a time. If they all are of different genres,it's all the more fun.

message 44: by Ash (new)

Ash (ashthemagicbookdragon) I'm back with an update! So I've tried it out, and it's surprisingly not that difficult reading multiple books at once. I've managed get through my reading list a lot faster too :)

message 45: by Juyee (new)

Juyee (juyee_98) | 16 comments Once I had gone totally bonkers because I was reading 6 books at a time. It really got crazy and I decided never to read so many books at once. Its just that, all those books had deeply intrigued me and I just couldn't wait to read them.

message 46: by Brittany (new)

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 59 comments I read anywhere from 2-5 books at a time. I always have a book at work I am reading when I can, and then I have 1 or 2 physical books at home as well as a kindle book, I love it because sometimes you are in the mood to read something and other times a book is really sad or dark and you'd rather have some humor in your life or you want something erotic! I am pretty good at not mixing up where I am, and it helps me to read a lot more books at once :)

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin I tend to read more than one book at a time, in different genres of course so I don't get confused. Sometimes I get bored with one and concentrate on another one and that helps a lot since I get book slumps a lot.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't generally like to read several books at once, but I find myself doing it all the time. I go to two different libraries, and they have different amounts of time you can have the books checked out, so I have to come up with elaborate plabs for the most efficient way to get the most reading done.

And then there are those times that I have to return a book halfway though it, whichmakes me want to bite my nails off- with my fingers attached to them! For example, I had to return In The Afterlight last week, and it's probably going to be checked out by the time I can reborrow it.

Even though I don't paticularly like it, multi-tasking in reading is quite a good skill to have- but only if you have a good memory when it comes to books, which lucky for me I have. If you need to read a books for school but you also want to read one for enjoyment, go ahead and expand your reading capacity!

message 49: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina *Lady Loki* | 4 comments I always read just one book at a time. I find that I tend not to make any progress if I read multiple books at once. Plus, the constant switching back and forth between storylines can be confusing.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi. At the moment I'm reading about 5 different books at the same time. It helps me when I want to read something different, one's a redread and the others are all new ones. I don't ever have a problem with it, it helps me
