I checked this book out at my local library in 1997, so it had to have been published at least in '96. A collection of "true" ghost stories, more historical/personal eyewitness accounts than lurid. I can't remember author or title, just a cover that had a thick orange border around what I think was a black and white photo or drawing of architecture. I vaguely remember one story involving a haunted saloon and a casual interaction between a male ghost and pretty female patron? Not especially helpful, I know. I've been looking for this one for a long time- would appreciate any assist!

Randall A. Reinstedt wrote a lot of books about ghosts and other weird happenings in California. The one that sounds the most like yours is California Ghost Notes: Haunted Happenings throughout the Golden State but I couldn't find a cover that sounds like what you describe.
