I read this book this year, in 2015, but I have a feeling it was written a lot earlier than that. It is a young adult book. I'm pretty sure it was written by a woman. The main character is a girl whose father has just died. She is being sent to live with her uncle or great-uncle because her mother is also dead. On the way their she meets a guy who is british, and at the end of the book, she gets engaged too. She also sees a woman in a red hood. She gets to her great uncle's house (it was an ancestral house), and sees a painting of the same woman who she saw earlier. She reads a book and finds out that ghosts of family members sometimes come to their descendants who are lonely or something like that. She sees the girl in the red hood again, and she either like shows her her memories, or vividly describes them to her. The girl in the red hood lives during the revolutionary war, and she ends up falling in love with a British general. She tells th main character about treasure hidden inside the house, and she finds it and saves the day because her great uncle is having money issues or something.
I think the cover is a beige color with an oval cut out with drawn people in it, but I might also be making stuff up.
If anyone can help me, I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
