Oryx and Crake
question
Thoughts on the world of Snowman/Jimmy

I just finished the book and I am still trying to process the world that Atwood created. I curious to know what other people think of the Children of Crake, the compound life versus life in the Pleeblands, the splicing of animal genes, the character of Oryx, and finally Crake killing Oryx. After reading the book I was left with more questions then answers, I'm hoping maybe someone will shed some light on those questions.

I think Oryx being killed was pretty in line with the possessiveness of Crake's character. I don't think Crake or Jimmy were truly in love with her. For Crake, she was a trophy and for Jimmy she was something to be worshipped and built up in his mind so much that she never could have lived up to it. She did create an amazing world. Crake just wanted to watch the world burn.
The Year of the Flood is the next book in this series. I definitely recommend reading that one. You will be left with other questions, but it fills in gaps about the world and the apocalypse from characters outside the walls.

Definitely!
I really enjoyed how she laced the first book into Year of the Flood. I havent read the last of the trilogy yet - has anyone else, does it answer as many questions as YotF does?

Once I start a trilogy or more I have to just keep reading like it is one long book, if the story/author is good everything will come together or it won't matter by the time you get to the end.
I'm starting the second book too. The title of the last book leads me to believe that Crake's motives will become more clear in the end. I like this author's dark humor and am looking forward to finishing the triology.
The most fascinating thing about this story was that Crake created this new breed of people and attempted to wipe out the world in an attempt to create a world without the need for religion, family units/marriage or love or governments etc...I think because these are the things that caused wars. By the end of the book we learn that they created a God out of Jimmy, they created songs and worshiped the sun etc...
