I think I read it last year or two years back max, its a YA novel, published after 90s' (guessing), dont remember much other than that.

Hey I found out, its alcatraz series by Brandon Sanderson ISBN:1444006681.
I have been racking my brain about this on and off for a couple of months now, As far as I can remember, the world in the book has powers that is based on wearing a glass/spectacle, eg: warrior glass gives combat powers. The protagonist is a kid who is in a foster home (gets bumped from one to another if im not mistaken) and the social worker in charge of him is his mom (he doesn't know that at first) who he later finds out is evil, his dad sends him sand for his birthday which she is waiting to snatch from him, he is clumsy and accidentally breaks things all the time which he later finds out is a power, like his grandfather who is always late. Then faces many problems and reaches the magical city of their people with the help of his grandfather, a cousin with warrior glasses and a girl of his age who is a knight wielding a crystal sword.They infiltrate an enemy building and recover some glasses if I am not mistaken. I can remember him going in search of his father into a tomb which is also a library where an answer to any question can be found but you'd have to trade your soul for it, there he finds his father's soul and rescues him. He also finds a glass which stops time (kind of). Back in the kingdom there is a peace treaty signing during which there is an assassination attempt. The city also has a library where they get into trouble and are teleported along with the library.Appreicate any help. TIA
