Part 1! (view spoiler)[ Alrighty so it took me FOREVER to get into this. Like...I was reading other things and didn't even really think about reading this because it did just not grab me right away.

However, as I read more, and was introduced to the characters of Nina and Matthias, I became more intrigued. I really want to know more about their backstory now, because there's clearly a crazy story behind their relationship.

I've been getting a Mistborn sort of vibe from this, but it's not a good comparison really because the only thing they have in common is that they're heist stories.

I guess I want to know more about this weird Grisha drug, and I want to know more about the backstories of the characters, but right now the characters seem a little flat. I feel like the worldbuilding is taking precedence and that the actual story is taking too long to begin. But I'm only a little into so I'm hoping/assuming it'll get better. (hide spoiler)]

Part 2 (view spoiler)[So I'm really liking the Nina/Matthias stuff going on. Am I also sensing some romance between Inej and Kaz? Because that would be cute. The long battle they got into before getting onto the ship was kind of drawn out, I don't think it really needed to be told from 3 different povs, but I thought it was clever that the first ship was a decoy. I'm enjoying it more but mostly I like Nina looking back on what led up to her life in Kerch. I'm interested to see how all this will pan out but there is going to be a lot of planning to read through, I think. (hide spoiler)]

I was expecting something to blow me away, everyone, and i mean EVERYONE seemed to love it. I like it but just wasn't enough for me. If i read it release day, i probably would have loved it...

I like learning about everyone's past but so far Inej is my favourite character. Was Nina in the Grisha series at all? I like all the couples actually but I have the feeling that they're not all going to pair off because that would be too happy and easy haha. I wonder what's happening to Inej. I made it through all of Part 1 and Chapter 7 today, about 115 pages.
(view spoiler)[ So far Inej is my favorite; she watches and waits for the best option to present itself. A very smart gal. I'm wondering if something might develop between her and Kaz? Not that I ship it.
Close second is Matthias - I find his staunch honor and stiffness endearing. He reminds me of Ned Stark, so rigid that it gets in his way.
Kaz is Matthias' opposite (they're foils, perhaps?), no moral code to speak of but he always knows how to get what he wants. At first I was charmed by Kaz's ruthlessness because I like a boy with a nice dark streak, but I can't quite bring myself to like him because he's such a cliche. Kaz is the archetypal uncatchable thief, very reminiscent of Kelsir from Mistborn or Locke Lamorra from the Gentleman Bastard series. As a character, Kaz doesn't strike me as very original.

I am beyond curious about all the mysteries the author is hinting at. What is the painful past between Nina and Matthias? Who is this Jordie Kaz keeps mentioning? What makes the Ice Court so impregnable? These questions make me want to read the whole book in one sitting, but alas, sleep sounds better.

@Ashley didn't Joost die at the hands of Anya? Kaz mentioned seeing a dead soldier with just the slightest hint of a mustache in Hoede's house. I assumed that was Joost, and that Joost's chapter only served as a sort of prologue.

(view spoiler)[ I lost a lot of respect for Matthias after finding out he actively helped Fjerdans in a genocide against Grisha. Even if he fell for Nina and changed his mind, I still find that unforgivable. In my opinion he should be the one trying to make amends to Nina, not the other way around. Then again, I don't know all the details yet.
The book is moving slowly but surely forward. I'm not bored yet but if they don't start infiltrating the Ice Court soon I might be.

It doesn't really have anything to do with the other Grisha series, except that it's set in the same world. It might help you to look up the different Grisha powers, like Heartrenders and Fabrikators; here's a link that explains the different sections pretty well.
Besides that, you don't need to know much of anything about Leigh Bardugo's other series.

Done: (view spoiler)[ I didn't expect it to end so soon! On by ebook copy from the library it said I had 200 ish pages left but the rest of it was a preview to Shadow and Bone. I wasn't ready for it to end! Such a cliffhanger. I liked it more than Shadow and Bone but not enough to rate it higher. I really liked the cast of characters but at times I was thinking that all the different perspectives were a bit overwhelming, and I didn't get to really identify with the characters too well because there were so many characters to learn about. I'm surprised that I'm enjoying this because there a lot of things in this book that I should be annoyed about, mostly Kaz's annoying habit of keeping secrets and the horrible things that he does. However, it's a compelling read, and I'm addicted! It's not the kind of book that's gripping, but it's very enjoyable and entertaining in a certain twisted kind of way. I think that this is the type of book that is meant to be savored, not read quickly, to be fully enjoyed. (hide spoiler)]

I was so agreeing with Inej while she climbed, everything is Kaz's fault haha. He put the whole group in jeopardy by going to look for Rollins just to flaunt his success in Rollins' face.
Can anyone explain to me why Kaz has such a phobia of touching people? Is it because of his swim with the corpses?
