I was away on vacation, so I'm sorry that it took so long to post!

Part 1:

The book begins with a newly-appointed soldier named Joost that has a crush on a Grisha named Anya. As he is making his rounds, they are all called to this one area where Anya is given a medicine that enhances her powers tremendously and allows her to take control of the people there. The medicine is known as jurda parem and it was created by a man named Bo Yul-Bayur. A man named Van Eck abducts Kaz and tells him that Bo Yul-Bayur has been kidnapped and he wants Kaz to go and rescue him from the Ice Court, which is extremely dangerous. With the promise of a huge amount of money, Kaz agrees and starts to get his team together. Inej, Kaz, and Nina, another Grisha, head towards a prison that is holding someone that Nina knows. She seems to care a great deal about him, but as she is about to rescue him, he wakes up and puts his hands around her neck.

Part 2:

It turns out that the man that they rescued is named Matthias and is a Fjerdan that despises Grisha. He also hates Nina because she betrayed him and said that he was a slaver, which caused him to go to Hellgate in the first place. After Matthias is retrieved from Hellgate, Kaz begins to make plans for their departure to the Ice Court. As they are about to leave, they are ambushed by multiple gangs, where Inej obtains a horrible stab wound on her side. Nina has been trying to fix her wounds, but she has remained unconscious on the lower part of the ship. As she sleeps, the others discuss the rest of the plan for the Ice Court. <\spoiler> (hide spoiler)]

Part 3:

Inej finally wakes up and begins to recover slowly. When they reach the shore, and after a little bit of traveling, they are attacked by two Grisha that are addicted to jurda parem. With the drug taking a huge toll on their bodies, Nina could not heal the injuries they acquired during the fight. Nina and Matthias are left to make a pyre for them. The background for Kaz was also mentioned. When Kaz's father died in a plow accident, he and his older brother Jordie moved to Ketterdam. Everything seems to be working out for the pair until Jordie was conned and lost a lot of money. Also, Nina and Matthias's story is also explained more in depth. Nina had saved Matthias from drowning and after spending time together trying to survive, they finally arrive at a port town. Matthias was certain that Nina had completely betrayed him by saying that he was a slaver, which caused him to be sent to Hellgate. However, she had actually saved him from undercover Grisha agents.

Part 4:

They put their plan into action by slipping into the crowd. Nina goes around the town and listens to the gossip to figure out what route the jailers take. Once that is figured out, they cut down a tree and while the jailers are moving the tree out of the road, the crew takes the places of six of the prisoners. Once they are inside the prison, they break out and start to look for Bo Yul-Bayur. While in the prison, Kaz and Inej have a few flashbacks to their pasts. Kaz hates being touched or touching flesh because it reminds him of his brother's rotten corpse amongst other corpses, thus that is why he wears gloves. Inej thinks about the night that Kaz freed her from the brothel she was forced to work in.


While looking for Bo Yul-Bayur, Kaz finds the man that he wants revenge against most, Pekka Rollins, also known as Hertzoon, the man that scammed his brother.

Part 5:

Since Kaz made a detour to deal with Pekka Rollins, the first plan failed. They had to use another plan to save Bo Yul-Bayur. This plan consisted of the girls sneaking in with the Menagerie. Inej was pulled aside because the guards were suspicious of her. Nina was escorted by Brum, who was supposed to be dead, and was then locked in a cell. Matthias had told Brum about Nina, but betrayed Brum to save Nina. With the information that Bo Yul-Bayur is being held in the treasury, they set out to rescue him. It turns out that Bo Yul-Bayur had died in the crossfire between the Kerch and the Fjerdans, and that his son is actually the one being held in the treasury. They are all surrounded at Djel, the holy tree, but Kaz saves them by pulling them underneath the tree. Under the tree, there is a huge tunnel of water that is supposed to lead them to safety.

Part 6 to the end:

The tunnel washes them up about a mile and a half from the harbor. Kaz is unconscious and on the verge of death, but Nina brings him back. Jesper, Wylan, and Inej acquire a tank and tear down a portion of the wall in the Ice Court. When they reach the harbor, they are surrounded by Fjerdans. To escape, Nina decides to take some jurda parem, which allows them to escape. When the exchange is made between Kaz and Van Eck, a lot of things happen: for one, Van Eck cancels the deal with Kaz, Inej is taken hostage, and Nina and Kuwei were never on the ship when the trade was supposed to have taken place. The Kuwei that came with them was Wylan in disguise as Kuwei. Van Eck had went rogue and wanted to use Bo Yul-Bayur for his own gain. A little bit after, Kaz shows up with his crew at Pekka Rollin's office and gets assistance from him because Kaz had actually let Rollins go in the Ice Court and had not killed him.

I've read chapter one. Not much to say so far. I'm always thrown off when the names of places and characters are so different from the names I'm used to from my own language and area. I wish there was a pronunciation guide.

I've started. This is a reread for me, to get me prepared for Crooked Kingdom I've missed Kaz and Inej so much!!!

Chapter 3(view spoiler)[ I almost forget how badass Kaz is. I love the scene meeting the other gangs. I love how in control of the situation he was. How he was ten steps ahead of everyone, that he knew they paid off the guards and that Big Bolliger was a traitor just by paying attention to his routine. And I love how much Kaz trust Inej. How he know that she'll always be there on time!

I also forget how funny Kaz was during the scene with Van Eck. Especially about the painting! I've miss this book so much! (hide spoiler)]

Through chapter three. (view spoiler)[I really like that the book doesn't open with Kaz. I think the intro with the parem makes sense. And then seeing Kaz from Inej first is good. It gives a little perspective. And Kaz. I just love Kaz. Even here in these few chapters. He's brutal and damaged and a genius. (hide spoiler)]

Watching Matthias kill the wolves had to be painful for Nina, but obviously there is a lot going on there. He's trying to strangle her! (hide spoiler)]

I just finished part one too! I didn't remember everything that happened too, so it great to get reacquainted with the characters (view spoiler)[ I forget how great Kaz and Nina's batter is. How much they get on each other nerves is so great. I love how smart Kaz is, but he smart in a way that doesn't seem unrealistic because it tell you how he knows everything and how he gets everything done!

The one problem I'm having is a problem that I had the first time reading it, their ages don't fit their characters. I can see Inej and I think (if I remember correctly) Wylan as teenagers but the other characters their ages don't fit. At the end of part one both Kaz and Nina feel like character that should be in there early to mid twenties and to make them both so young feel wrong, especially with the amount of things they were both supposed to have accomplished and experienced. I get why the author had to make them so young because if they weren't it couldn't be marketed as young adult. Even so Kaz, Nina and Matthias should older it would make more sense for their characters. Wylan, Inej and Jasper could stay younger though.

I actually think that (view spoiler)[their ages make sense. Yes, a lot was supposed to have happened to them, but I feel like it makes their motivations more realistic (and understandable) for them to be so young. Otherwise, for me, it would be annoying for a 30 year old to be stuck on some of the issues they are. And to make some of the mistakes they do.

I also love how brilliant Kaz is! And how it slowly unfolds how he developed his brilliance. (hide spoiler)]

But I also get that they are all supposed to be prodigies so their ages make a little sense but I still would have prefer them to be older. It just throws me off when they say Kaz is seventeen when I see him as 22 in my head lol (hide spoiler)]

Through chapter 12. (view spoiler)[I really like how different each character is. They have the their own distinct personalities, which makes switching from perspective to perspective great.

I want something to happen with Nina and Matthias. This anger can't last lpng without a fight or something.

And Inej was stabbed! I don't want that pleasure house to ever get her again. And I she and Kaz obviously feel more for each other than they are willing to admit.

Chapter 13 (view spoiler)[ Oh Kaz is so mad he can't even think straight! How dare anyone lay a hand on his wraith!! I forgot how brutal Kaz was during the scene with Oomen. Cutting out his eye throwing him over board because he hurt Inej!! Also I love the line "My Wraith would counsel mercy. But thanks you, she's not here to plead your case." (hide spoiler)]

I'm up to part 4 and I'm enjoying it more then my first read through!!! (view spoiler)[ what happened to Kaz and Jordie is so messed up, I'm not looking forward to rereading what happens next to Jordie. I love Nina and Matthias' complicated past and relationship, about all the things they were and are still willing to do with for each other. I kinda forgot how stubborn both of them are how they want to say things then dont. Like when Nina is telling him why he said he was a slave, she want to be kind and tell him she was sorry but she let her pride get the better of her. I want them to be happy (hide spoiler)]

Inej stolen and sold into slavery, Kaz being robbed of his money and his brother, Nina being involved in Ravka's civil war (even if she didn't fight), Matthias losing his family and then neing betrayed by Nina. Still don't know a ton about Jesper and Wylan. Well, Jesper has hos family on the farm, who think he's going to school. So his might not be as tragic, but still sad.

And the story of Nina turning Matthias in. That broke my heart. And now they are going to stop the others from their mission, if they can. (hide spoiler)]

Even tho it kinda makes me sad that during he climb she decides that she can't keep chasing after Kaz. I totally believe that she right, because let be honest even if Kaz does care for her he has no problem using Inej, but I want them to be happy and together!! (hide spoiler)]

Matthias and Nina are so good together. It's great how they have changed each other. Because they both have strong beliefs that aren't wrong, but they aren't right either.

I had forgotten about it being Kuwei, and the fact that they were Grisha!

That last chapter with Kaz. Man. He's so dark and twisted but it makes perfect sense. And I'm so sad that he's so messed up. And his thoughts about Inej. So sweet and yet completely heartbreaking. (hide spoiler)]

Just finished. This was even better the second time around. This cast of characters is just fantastic. Kaz, Inej, and Matthias are my favorites. (view spoiler)[There were so many details that I had forgotten. I didn't remember how everything went with Van Eck. I can't believe he has Inej though. That part I remembered.

That end with Kaz stealing from Pekka Rollins was perfect. The man deserves what's coming for him. (hide spoiler)]
