Joshua | 44 comments A book I read in elementry school. It was about a family, don't remember much about the main character. She kept asking her grandma if she was prety and the grandma said no, that she didn't need to be or that pretty is overrated or something like that. At one point the family gets a TV and the dad is upset because the mother is watching TV and ignoring him. The mother would run down the block when she heard her husbands car come down the street, but stops doing this once they get the television. In the end the grandmother dies from a snake bite. Really sad ending. I don't think it was an elementry school book.

``Laurie (laurielynette) Grandma dying from a snake bite is almost as bad as Grandma getting run over by a reindeer.
Someone who is more familiar with children's books than I am will be able to help you with this I hope.

Pdesr | 5 comments The only book I can remember where the grandmother dies from a snake bite, is "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech.

Its not Walk Two Moons, although I've read that too. It was definitely a Newbery winner. The mother in the story was agoraphobic or mentally ill in some way and I think she ended up leaving the family in the end. The story was set in Oklahoma or somewhere in the desert.

Sophie (notemily) | 477 comments There are only 90 or so Newbery winners, have you looked at those? https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...

Diana Welsch | 530 comments Is it The Higher Power of Lucky? I haven't read it so I don't know how many of the details fit, but it does take place in the desert. Also, there was some fuss over this book because it uses the word "scrotum" to describe where a dog was bitten by a rattlesnake, so it has the snakebite detail in a somewhat different context.

SamSpayedPI | 2305 comments Now that it's been abandoned, I can solve the thread: it's My Louisiana Sky. It was recently the subject of another thread, and it looked interesting so I took it out of the library.

The two readers remembered completely different plot points, but I just read it and I'm sure it's the same.

And here's another thread where that reader remembers something different:

I agree, I found the TV and the snake bite plot points in the book. Moving to Solved.
