Kayla | 2 comments I remember reading this book when I was younger. I would guess that it was published somewhere between 1980 and 1999. I read it in the late 90s, and bought it at a library sale of old, unwanted books.

There are two story lines. One is a story line that is more medieval fantasy. I remember a conversation between a woman and her betrothed (maybe husband?) about how the large red scar on her back was not from her sister or brother scalding her in the bath with hot water, but was from having her wings removed.

There is a tailor who supplies the hidden, fairy-world kingdom with clothes for their prince. I remember a description about a velvet outfit with pearl buttons and detailing.

In the fairy world, I know the prince has a whipping boy. I think his hair is red, or possibly the prince's is. One of the two of them is a changeling, I think.

Somewhere in the title or series name has something to do with keys, hidden/secret, and doors/trapdoors.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Update: Solved!

This is the third in The Spellkey trilogy, though it can stand alone.
