AJ Le Brun (purplelurple) | 4 comments Hi,
I read a book when I was a teeneager, in about 2000.
The plot involved specialist guard dogs (dobermans?) trained to kill. They were in transit when the truck crashed, releasing them in to a coastal town I believe. They hid under the boardwalk by the beach (i think!) and killed people off, the townspeople not knowing what what was happening.

Any ideas on the book title or author?! I'm severely dyslexic and it's one of the few books that I've managed to read start to finish... I want to be able to boast that I managed to complete a book, but to do that I need to know the name :s

AJ Le Brun (purplelurple) | 4 comments I don't think it is as it was a pack of dogs.
Thanks for suggesting :)

Krazykiwi | 152 comments Definitely not Cujo, (view spoiler)

Dean Koontz has written a few books with hyper-intelligent dogs (particularly Watchers) but they tend to be labradors. Still, it's a reoccuring theme for him, and he's written a lot of books, does his name ring a bell?

AJ Le Brun (purplelurple) | 4 comments I've just read a quick overview of each of Dean Koontz's fictions on his website, but none ring a bell. Thank you for the suggestion though.

It sounds like someone got the idea for this from the old (1972) moved The Doberman Gang. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068491/?... for the IMDB link. I have no idea if they did a book based on the movie--or if the movie was based on a book. Maybe try Wiki or somewhere else to see if there was a book?

Trilobyte | 184 comments Sounds like it's this one - also a 70's movie, can't find a goodreads link for it

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Maybe, The Dogs by Robert Calder?

Here is a review from Kirkus:
"Alex Bauer, a nice man if somewhat depressed by a personal life halfway between a former wife and a new student, adopts a stray dog, Orphan, who's everything a man's best friend should be. Not knowing that Orphan's a refugee from a nearby canine facility where they believe that ""pethood has been disastrous"" and they're Skinnerizing their animals as attack dogs. During the visit of one of Bauer's sons, Orph attacks him and then takes off for the woods where he leads a predatory pack, attacking cattle and a mother and child. The whole vicinity is mobilized with troopers and Bauer goes along with them to find Orph, gentle him with a word, and kill him with kindness. . . . You'll sit and stay all the way. "

Remember anything about the cover?

No response in 2 years but I'm going to move this to Solved based on the reviews:

"The menace consists of 4 highly trained attack dogs, malevolent brutes the lot of them, who escape from the van transporting them, and wreak havoc as thay prey on residents in a small rural community."

"about a couple of killer dogs (so called Manstoppers) who escape after a lunatic hijacks the truck that carriers them. The dogs end up in a small town and start ripping apart everyone (and everything) that gets in their way."

"A truck driver transporting 4 killer dogs loses control of his truck when a hitchhiker he picked up attacks him."

Someone else was looking for the same book here:
