Alicia | 49 comments How did you find and get hooked on DH?

I came about it unintentionally. I was in my local library roaming through the books when I found the "swap" shelf. (In case some do not know a "swap" shelf is where people can come take a book home for keeps and free. They do encourage you bring books in to exchange but it is not required, thus "swap.") I found Kiss of the Night and thought it would be a good read. I was right and before I knew it I wanted more so I looked up the author and found her series. I went out a bought every book I could in the series and buy the new ones as soon as they are in paperback version. Therefore my curiosity in my library gave me unimaginable joy and an obsession lol.

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Wow that is a really clever idea your library had there Alicia. I actually was bored out of my skull with so many of the other vampire romances. The dudes were always darkly brooding, uber possessive, nobody really had much of a sense of humor. And the chicks could barely stand on the front porch without the dude going spastic. So I was trolling through Amazon or Borders back in the day when I first came across the series. But knowing my luck, I didn't think my library would have it(as back then they barely had enough of the YA books in series I had started numerous times but could never finish!) so I wasn't holding my breathe.

Then I was trolling the romantic comedy books by Harlequin, and if it wasn't for a mis-shelved opportunity I wouldn't have found Night Pleasures right there in my own library! Took it home and devoured in 2 days or so. And ran back to find more. Was bummed, but blessed again when my dad told me about this used bookstore we have in town and they had a used copy of Night Pleasures and I had him buy it for(short of some funds at the time) right away. After that went back online and discovered Fantasy Lover and been hooked ever since. I'm thankful this was way back early when the series was just taking off. Not sure what I would have done if it were already 20 books deep in the series.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I'm not hooked. I can quit anytime I want to! lol

Truthfully, the first couple of books in the series that I read weren't all that for me. I LOVE The League series and I couldn't understand why the DH series wasn't working for me. Well, I was having a conversation with someone about them and they are big fans so when I was at the library I grabbed Acheron and I really liked it. It was different with the way it took you back to the beginning. So I decided to read a few more. I think reading Acheron helped me a lot with the world building and understanding who was who and what was what. I'm reading them totally out of order but I've read about 7 of them altogether now.

Leah | 7 comments I've had a couple friends struggle with the first couple and I always tell them to keep going. I think by Zarek's book you really see the world start to open up beyond the DH/Daimon dynamic of the first two books.

I first got hooked when my local bookstore started going out of business and sell their books cheap. I think I got the first 5 or 6 and after that it was all over!

message 5: by Silentdoe2 (new)

Silentdoe2 | 36 comments Truthfully I'm not sure how it happened. It must've been suggested to me by barnes and noble so I read one. And another. And another. I must've looked really weird reading in the hallways unerringly moving out of peoples way now that I think about it.

I had finally gotten caught up when Acheron was released and thought "Well now I have to reread them all to see what clues i might've missed"

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments One of my besties beat me over the head to read Born of Night. After one of her besties beat her over the head to read it. It was the end of March, 2013. So I read Born of Night, fell in love with Nykyrian, and three weeks later had read all five League books out at the time. I read Darling's book, in hardback, in three days... In my defense, the power was out all day one of those days and I did nothing but read. I worked totally from home at the time, and couldn't work without power.

Once I finished those, the same bestie told me to read Night Pleasures. That was three months before Styxx came out. I was reading Devil May Cry when my nephew was born, and he'll be two in October. I bought most of the series during the ebook sales at Styxx's release and Son of No One's release.

Now I'm all caught up, own all of League and DH, have read Acheron four times, and am impatiently waiting for November and the next League book. I also have an Acheron symbol case on my Galaxy S3 that I bought from the DH Cafe Press store, and I have the Acheron symbol canvas messenger bag. I'm putting the Nykyrian license plate frame on my Christmas list this year.

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 534 comments My story is almost exactly the same as Dhfan4life's! Coincidence? I think not ;) I discovered Night Pleasures and fell in immediate love -and lust- with Talon. Went back for Fantasy Lover and was hooked! Bought them after that. Have only been disappointed by 1 book but can't remember which anymore...I do remember that after that one Sherri said she'd no longer let the publisher push her and release something she wasn't happy with.

message 8: by BookPusher D (new)

BookPusher D (bookpusherd) | 130 comments Fate!!! That's how ;D

well.. I like to think so...

I actually met the AG before I knew who she was, at my job 5 yrs ago. I actually let her in the room and said a few hellos etc..
She was the only author during that hour of Q&A, so my coworkers and I got to just lounge and listen to the strangest conversation -ever. We were confused, b/c the crowd and the speaker were talking about real people. The crowd was upset, some panicked and worried about these people. It took a while to figure out what was going on. I remember thinking everyone at that Q&A was off their rockers...haha. That was just before Retribution came out. (Remembered the cover, and the wild reaction when they announced it and showed the book)

That night I checked my Nook, b/c I kept thinking I knew Sherri's name... I had bought the first CON sometime earlier b/c it sounded like my cup of tea, but hadn't had time to read it. Then 2 yrs later my mom shoves a book in my purse and tells me I better read it immediately, that its one of the hotter books she has read in a while. (She reads a lot!) and that i would really like the story. It was Fantasy Lover. I love greek myth and adore modern twists to legends, but I mostly read YA/NA.

I loved it! and logged it in my GR account and saw it was connected to a series, so I immediately got the eBook of Night Pleasers, and that was it! I was hooked. I asked for B&N gift cards for christmas and spent all of it on every DH eBook, anthology, & novella, I needed to be caught up and spent a few weeks reading them all...including CON.. up to The Guardian, right before Time Untime came out. I realized once I got to CON in the published lineup that the AG was the author from "the strange Q&A". I was kinda sad I couldn't remember all that was said at that panel. I have searched the tubes for it but no such luck :(

And now I am totally one of the crowd worried and anxious or super excited for all the little tidbits and news on my DH family.. hahaha Everyone around me reads them now, and after many attempts to try and find her at my job every year and failing, we finally got to go to a signing last year and this year. I have been to a few very popular author signings, and no one is as friendly or fun to talk to as Sherrilyn. Its like running into an old friend, except you have never met before... not like an assembly line get in say hi and get out type of vibe.

Adam | 33 comments Picture the scene, young lad is walking through town when it absolutely buckets it down(this was about 10am)and he doesn't have an umbrella. He looks around desperately for cover from the rain and see's the local library close by so he makes a dash for it.

Once inside the library he decides to have a wander through the fantasy section(at that point in time he was majorly into his elf's, orc's and dragons) and he spots a random book about werewolf's. He reads the summary thinks its worth a read and the next thing you know 2-3 hrs have gone by and he is absolutely stunned at the awesome book he has just read.

By now the rain has stopped but he goes to log on to the library computer to see if there was any follow up books to the masterpiece he had just read only to find out it was the 18/19th book in a series......Now most people would feel daunted by that but the lad's only thought was "there is at least 17 more works of art our there!!"

And so the treasure hunt began...i now have a bookshelf for my fantasy books, a bookshelf for my paranormal books and a shelf with every sherrilyn book(note i have read any of the kinsley mcgreggor books as yet)!

Dude I actually almost tripped over Talon's book in Walden's when it first came out. I was searching all over the shelves and it wasn't up yet. And weirdly enough they had copies on the floor in front of a shelf across I guess where it was meant to go. But I snatched up my copy and ran to the counter with it and but out my membership cards and got a great discount on it!

Oh and meant to add too in my initial post. I was hooked over the mythology of the world as well as the humor and romance of course. First time I saw such a rich origins story that I was drawn into right away.

Aww see I love how SK is reaching out and touching folks around the world in so many ways. Just living your life one moment and then BAM! you have been Menyon-ized. :D

message 12: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments I love that, Dh! Menyon-ized... Yup. She was the gateway to paranormal for me, and I'v haven't looked back since. Hard to believe it's only been a little over two years.

message 13: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments ROFL, Menyon-ized. That sums it up VERY nicely. =)

How did I get hooked? Amazon, two years ago. XD

Since I have Kindle, Amazon sent me an email announcing that SK's books were on sale at crazy prices (like, $1.99 crazy), in celebration of the pending release of Styxx. I had heard the name Sherrilyn Kenyon before, but had never read any of her books. So naturally, I couldn't pass up a deal to read some books by an obviously well-established author, and promptly purchased the first three books in the series. My thought was that if I liked them, great, but if I didn't ... well, I was only out six bucks. XD

Have you ever read a book that started with a (usually hilarious) line that just grabbed you from the get-go? I have, but they have been very few and far between. But that's what happened when I started Night Pleasures, and read Selena's opening line: "I say we stake him to an anthill and throw little pickles at him."

Yep, I just KNEW I was gonna like this book. And I wasn't disappointed. XD

I found Night Embrace to be even funnier. From Talon spending the night/day at Sunshine's loft, to Zarek and Valerius duking it out (after Val had gotten into with Talon, naturally), and numerous other scenes, I was officially hooked. And after I read Dance With the Devil (which just broke my heart), I knew I had to start reading the rest of the series.

So I did. And that crazy sale helped a lot. XD

message 14: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Hahahaha, cool thread and although I have mentioned it in a few threads a few years ago, I stumbled over my first DH (which was actually a WH) book in my local library. I read the back of the book and thought "poor girl, dumped by FED-Ex, I need to find out more" and I read the most amazing love scene in the whole Hunterverse. There is this gorgeous guy (Vane), who happens to shift into a wolf who falls for this amazing store owner (Bride), who happens to be a voluptuous woman (not the stick thin, mandarin breasted heroines I usually come across). I loved this book and I loved that this book had a beginning and an end (I do find cliffhangers very annoying). Eventually I read another book of SK and low and behold there they were again as side characters and I said:"Hello, I know you guys." I looked on the internet, found out it was a series and started reading (not necessarily in chronological order).
With the League it was similar. I came across Caillen's book (because I was reading anything from SK by then) and fell in love with Darling. Once I did get a hold of his book after its release, I read it in one night. I cried very much that night.
What really Menyon-ized me, I think, was finding this group here on Goodreads. I noticed I am not alone and there are others out there that love the same books and the same characters and are as crazy as I am about their well being.

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments I too loved it when I found this group.

message 16: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Preach Manuela! I swear finding the group was like coming home to me. Cause I had soooo much I wanted to talk about with peeps about the books. Which I hadn't done in years since the very first site that used to have a group chat and I met a few people there that were from SK's team and came in under the character names. So it be like a chat with say Mama Lo or somebody for a while there along with other fans.

But this group definitely broke the mold for sure. Side note glad everyone is enjoying the Menyon-ized word choice. Totally just came to me, lol. And yet I keep picturing SK as one of the little yellow minion peeps from Despicable Me running around when I read it.

Jais (jetoftherock) | 5 comments How I got hooked? Hmmm...
After reading Gena Showalter's The Stone Prince, I looked for books similar to it and Fantasy Lover came up. I read it, I liked it and boom! I was sucked in!

message 18: by Cindi (new)

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 534 comments Jais, I loved The Stone Prince too! Wish I could remember if I read that before DH; I was a huge Gena fan for a long time :)

Oh how I love to be a Menyon! But honestly I look ghastly in yellow :P

Have ya'll all reread the entire series?

message 19: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I've re-read my favorite passages quite a few times. But no time to do a full re-read though personally.

Monie_11 | 4 comments I first became menyon-ized when I was in 1st year college back in 2009. I was browsing the internet when I stumbled upon the first book in the series. From then on, whenever I get the chance to go to a bookstore, I always make sure to look for SK's books. As of now, I have a copy of all the dark-hunter series and have read it 3 times. Don't know why I am so hooked up with her books. I also make sure to write down my favorite quotes from each book. :)

Charlotte! You have help! Monie, Charlotte posts quotes in a thread here, maybe you could help?

Alicia | 49 comments I like the quote idea, never thought of that. I usually just reread stories (not in order) to cheer myself up or find advice when copying certain quotes could have the same affect. :)

Adam (doward) | 165 comments So, I'm at a caravan and had forgotten my kindle, it should have been worst weekend of my life, however, I go to this little car boot and I find a book called Sword of Darkness for 20p and I fell in love. after searching online I discovered that Kinley McGregor was a pseudonym for our AG so I brought Son of No One and read it only to realise it was the last current book in series so I brought everything in one hit and I've been hooked ever since.

message 24: by Will (new)

Will | 129 comments I got hooked because I saw the cover of the first Chronicles of Nick book, infinity, and thought it looked cool, and for the next three years, I kept buying the Chronicles of Nick books even though I hadn't actually read any of them, just because I liked the covers.

About six months before the 5th CoN book came out, I actually read the first book, and loved it, I really wanted to know more about all the characters, and ended up finishing the first four CoN books in less than a week, and was sooooooo unhappy that I had over 5 months left until the next book, but with work and college, I managed to pass the time, and when I got the 5th book, I finished it that day.

At that point, there was NO WAY I could wait another year, so I went on Sherrilyn's website, and found out about the Dark Hunter/Were Hunter/Dream Hunter/Hellchaser books, and I was SOOOOOO Excited!!!

I downloaded a reading list from SK's website, and she had a reading order for every book, even the short stories and novellas, in the series, so I started with fantasy lover, and read every book short story and novella up to Styxx over the course of the next few months, it was so incredible read all of this AFTER being only kind of introduced to most of these characters in CoN, it really opened up the world of these books sooooo much.

Then, I saw on her reading list that the next book, Son of No One, was also a lords of avalon book, so I read Sword of Darkness and Knight of Darkness, which did a great job setting up realms and characters that would show up again in in Son of No One.

Now I wait impatiently for the books to come out, I loved instinct, I really loved Dragonbane, and I love how the series is going. On that reading list that SK had posted, she said CoN was both a prequel and sequel of the Dark Hunterverse that would at some point meet up with the Dark Hunter/Were Hunter/Dream Hunter/Hellchaser/Lords of Avalon series, and now a trilogy was announced that the Deadmans Cross series is coming out, which combine the Hellchaser storyline with the Sea Wolves books.

I can't wait until the Chronicles of Nick, Dark Hunter, Were Hunter, Dream Hunter, Hellchaser, Lords of Avalon, Sea Wolves, and Deadman's Cross series all meet up in one book.

Veronica (flowerpot) | 263 comments Well for me it was during the London Olympics 2012! I went shopping and at that time I was into Charlaine Harris (True Blood) and I was going through the series and Fantasy Lover was an add-on. While waiting for a train I started reading Fantasy Lover which was the smaller book but once I started I could not stop and wanted to read the next book and 25 books later I am glad I read that book first. I still have not read the Charlaine Harris book I bought!
