YA or possibly childrens/tweens- set in middle or junior high/high school

MC is a girl who is in either middle or early high school. She has a best friend who is nerdy and is really into plants.

A new girl from California with long red hair moves into town and goes to their school. MC becomes good friends with new girl, and drifts away from plant-loving friend.

Red haired girls lies about things to seem cooler than she is, like playing the guitar. She dates both MC's twin brothers, using them for popularity, ie dates star football player brother during football season, then star basketball playing brother during basketball season.

Sometime in the story there is a camping trip. Possible names in story : Denise, Dan, Dave, Beth Kurtz

Not really coming of age, but just about how friendships and girlness evolve and change at those ages.

Hard copy paperback- I think I got it at the school book fair if that makes any difference.

80's photo of girl with long red hair on the cover.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Do you remember the time period/location the story takes place?
Part of a series?
Did the nerdy friend play a big role in the story?
Why did the red hair girl move from California?

Nikki | 4 comments 1980s, which back then was present day. IIRC, the setting was someplace in the midwest
Not part of a series, nerdy friend was a supporting character. I think the girl moved from Cali because her father was transferred through his job.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments I can't seem to find a cover or any additional info for it, but Where Are the Boys? by Janet Adele Bloss has the keywords Denise Kurtz, Dave, brothers, and basketball as common phrases, according to Google Books.

Also, if you type 'California' into the Google Books search section for the book, a passage "She just moved here from California" pops up.

Here is the Google Books link
