message 2202: by Katelyn (new)

Katelyn (ladylazarus7) | 1 comments I started "Mrs. Dalloway" by Virginia Woolf not too long ago. I like it so far, but I enjoyed "To The Lightouse" much more. Woolf knows my soul.

message 2203: by Jen (new)

Jen | 6 comments In Cold Blood. I just found out one of the killer's donated his eyes to the hospital I work at. Creepy!

Katrina, check back in and let us know what you think... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, especially if you're expecting typical science fiction.

I just started La Promesse De Laube by Romain Gary--so far it's much more engaging than other French literature from the 60s. (I'm looking at you, Alain Robbe-Grillet!)

message 2207: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I just started Cathedral by Raymond Carver. Read some of his stuff in college and thought I'd give him another try.

Lauli | 263 comments The second part of Fortunata and Jacinta. Found the first part quite difficult to get through, but I never give up on a book before I finish, so on with it!

message 2210: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (awallis) | 4 comments I am working through the librivox recording of the 12 vols of Aesop's Fables. I'm almost done with The 39 Steps, and have started Les Miserables vol 1, the Three Musketeers, the Federalist, and Ben-hur.

I love books but this is the first time I am juggling so many at once.

message 2212: by Linda (new)

Linda Recently started 1984; can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to it.

Whoa - Les Mis, Three Musketeers, and Ben Hur all at once? And is that The Federalist, as in John Jay and the Federalist Papers? You go, Girl!

So sorry to hear that, Ginny! How about
Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis? Funny, wry British sense of humor.

Curious what you think of this (Morven Caller). I think I voted for it for our club choice once, but it didn't win.

Mike | 78 comments I just started The Great Gatsby.

message 2234: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 248 comments I'm halfway with Nadine Gordimer's July's People. Anti-apartheid in South Africa will never be a boring theme for me. It is just a very sad topic for me. Almost the same feeling I have with Holocaust. Senseless killings.

message 2235: by Joselito Honestly (new)

Joselito Honestly and Brilliantly (joselitohonestlyandbrilliantly) | 372 comments Haven't read the book. But were the killings because of the anti-apartheid movement, or were they because of the apartheid policy?

message 2236: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I am starting A Passage to India today. I am new to this group and this will be my first read with the group :)

Try "Mrs. Pettigrew Lives for a Day", "Confederacy of Dunces", "Vile Bodies" for a hoot and holler! "Scoop"is not depressing. Anything by Thurber or Christie should fit the bill. I liked "Flaubert's Parrot", which is kind of light. There are others, but I'll have to go back and look at the list to remind myself....Oh yes, Austin is never depressing either, is she?

message 2238: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I started "The Red Harvest" this morning. Reading it along with "A Passage to India".

message 2239: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 248 comments Joselito wrote: "Haven't read the book. But were the killings because of the anti-apartheid movement, or were they because of the apartheid policy?"

The majority blacks seized the government from minority whites in Johannesburg. So, the whites were persecuted and many were killed. I understand that this is fiction though.

message 2243: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 248 comments I am starting A. S. Byatt's The Children's Book. I read that A. S. Byatt and Margaret Drabble are siblings. I know that Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt are a couple. In the course of my reading, I also earlier knew that Jean Rhys and Ford Maddox Ford used to be lovers. All of these people have books included in 1001. Would anyone has a ready list of all these? It is definitely interesting! Notice their influences to each other, what they wrote, etc.

message 2244: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katrinasreads) Started If on a Winter's Night a Traveler last night and fell in love with the opening couple of chapters!
