I'm about half way through Trainspotting. great story but I have to work through the dialect barrier, which slows down the reading process.

Truman Capote is one of my favorites - I started "In Cold Blood" one Friday night, and next thing I new the book was over... and so was my weekend. Perhaps reading it while I was alone late at night was not a good choice, though :)

Everyman, thanks for posting this. It looks like a really interesting list! Not many cross-overs between the Newsweek list and the 1001 list but they have two different goals so that's fair enough. Only problem then is - more books too read ... sighs ...
Currently working my way through War and Peace. It's a very dense book, it takes some time to get the various character straight - or just straighter - and I already know that I will have to read it again at some point ... but I like it. Not as much as Anna Karenina yet but we'll see.
I just started and finished Night. I don't think it's on the list, but it was very good. Next up is Catch-22.
Just started Catch-22. I was hoping to finish it for the discussions starting July 15th but not sure if that's going to happen...
Just started The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak for another group discussion, but it's not on the 1001 list.
I have fallen off the list for a while due to some of the books I was reading I just did not like. On Sunday I started reading "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte and really like it so far.
I just started "The shining" by Stephen King. I'm merely at the begggining but so far, and even though I like th writing, the story hasn't captivated me. But that could soon change.

Stacie wrote: "I am currently reading Henderson the Rain King, and am really enjoying it so far."I started this one also. How do you like it so far?
I haven't read Bellows in ages, and it is about time!
I recently started The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. I have been avoiding the movie until I had a chance to read the book, yet I still find myself seeing Kate Winslett's face as I read about the character Hanna. This is an incredibly fast read and I am sure I will be done with it in no time.
I just started reading "The Invisible Man", I have it at home for quite some time, so I guess, I should finally read it.

I finished it last week..or something like that. :) I really liked it. I have to say that it might just be my favorite Bellow.
"City of God" by E.L Doctorow. Anyone else read it/planning to read it soon? 100 pages in it's a wonderful many-layered novel with a lot of food for thought. I'd love to discuss it with someone.

I'm about to finish The Time Machine by Wells and I read the Ellison book in high school...

I have just started Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth. It has been a struggle so far, but I will hang in there in hopes that it gets better. Does it? Have you read it yet?

Missed the Group Read for Martin Amis's Dead Babies since I had some library books to get out of the way so starting that now.Edit. I also noticed that it's not on the 2008 list so can't count it since I intend to keep track of the 2008 list since I just got here this year.
Just started In Cold Blood and am looking forward to it, but prepared for an intense read, based on Paula's comments a couple weeks back.
Linda wrote: "Just started In Cold Blood and am looking forward to it, but prepared for an intense read, based on Paula's comments a couple weeks back. "fantastic read... I loved it. It changed the genre completely and is so compelling it reads like fiction. Brilliant.
Just gone off list to read The Famished Road by Okri, very interesting read though only 55 pages in.
I just started House of Leaves. I am having trouble putting it down. And a little trouble figuring it out.
Have you read World's Fair?I'd like a comparison/ reference point before I inject another Doctorrow high on my list.World's Fair was really fine. ps Have you read Roberto Bollaño's book -2666 --2nd ps I think The Road by Cormac McCarthy impacted me more than any other book this year
Jerry wrote: "Have you read World's Fair?I'd like a comparison/ reference point before I inject another Doctorrow high on my list.World's Fair was really fine. ps Have you read Roberto Bollaño's book -2666 --2n..."I read 2666, but I skipped a lot in the Part About the Murders. Who can read descriptions of the murders of hundreds of women we know nothing about other than that they were raped and murdered? The rest of the book was OK, certainly better than The Savage Detectives, which I found almost unreadable. Love Doctorro, Loved The Road.
