Melissa, I think my mom must have read me the Waterbabies. I should read that again. It's a fond memory from childhood. I think there was an animated movie too...

Watership Down too!

Oh, and I loved Pippi Longstocking!

Well, a bit confusing, haven't really gotten so far yet. Haven't read anything else by him, so this'll be my first =)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Is The Satanic Verses not on the list?
Just checked -it is on the original list as well.
I read it some years ago and found it rather hard to understand what all the controverse was about. But after some googling, it all started to make sense. I want to read it again one of these days - as well as read some other stuff by Rushdie.

message 1155: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Megha, Midnight's Children is on my list of books I have to either get from the library or buy at some point. It sounds like an amazing book. I have Shalimar the Clown on my shelf, however, so this will probably be the next Rushdie I read...

I read this a week or so ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Let me know what you think.

message 1165: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I started reading Sense and Sensibility last Tuesday. I've read a lot of the classics on the list already - Jane Austen quite a few times, but I am re-reading them all, especially the ones I haven't read in awhile. Reading S&S again now that I am much older and have more life experience is resonating more with me now than when I first read her when I was a young teen. It is delightful!

Kristi, The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my favorite books. If you like it, you should pick up The Stolen Child sometime. Their similarity is only in the way they pull you into the story.

Molly (veggrrl) | 12 comments Shelley wrote: "I am just going to start 1984- I just finished Animal Farm and I am hooked on George Orwell."

I know what you mean...I love Orwell. I've read alot of his fiction. I remember also really liking 'Down and Out in Paris and London' and 'Keep the Aspidistra Flying'. The latter doesn't have as deep of subject as his others like 'Animal Farm' and '1984'--but I really enjoyed it. And since you liked '1984' I recommend you read 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood--it's very similar. A very powerful book...

message 1197: by Daisy (new)

Daisy (daisytown) | 3 comments I just started '2001: a space odyssey' today. The introduction in my copy mentioned that this book is written simultaneously with the script of the Stanley Kubrick film. But I can't read and watch both the book and the film at the same time, so I'll start with the book!

Molly- Thank you so much for your recommendation- I also enjoy Margaret Atwood but I have not yet read "The Handmaid's Tale" I will check this out!

message 1199: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne Just started Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

message 1200: by Molly (new)

Molly (veggrrl) | 12 comments Hi Shelley,
You're very welcome. I've read only two books by her so far--'The Handmaid's Tale' and 'Robber Bride'. And I'm getting ready to start 'Cat's Eye'.
'The Handmaid's Tale' is one of those books that will haunt you, you'll think about it long after you've already finished it--at least I have. It really makes you think. The storyline is pretty terrifying actually. But it's well-worth it! I hope you enjoy it. :)
