Elizabeth (Alaska) As advertised, I started The Red and the Black. I am so enjoying the 19th Century French authors!

message 6502: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I'm reading The Mysteries of Udolpho. I'm 14% done and haven't even gotten to what I thought the book was about. It's easy enough to read, but there is a lot of repetition. And fainting.

Katrina (katrinasreads) 100 pages into Brave New World and loving it, suprisingly easy read.

Mayaluna | 3 comments Caitie wrote: "I just started Persuasion by Jane Austen. It will be my second Austen."

Persuasion is my favorite Austen book. If you can get a hold of Belknap Press/Harvard press's annotated and illustrated version, it is a real gem. It was so wonderfully done - with bits of letters to her sister, fashion plates of the day, paintings and insights on the books Jane was reading at the time etc... They are issuing one a year. I am now re-re-re-reading the annotated P&P.

Mayaluna | 3 comments I've gotten into Moby-Dick, and much to my surprise I am rather enjoying it. Leslie Fiedler's literary critique in Love and Death in the American Novel has been a great companion to keeping my interest alive.

The story itself gets better but I'm no sure I like the style or the concept.

Ed Let me know what you think, I almost read that a little while ago but couldnt get it from the library and the stupid B&N is now 49% coffee shop and 49% digital book seller and 0% real books that are worth a shit. So let me know if its worth putting in some more effort:)

message 6514: by Karena (new)

Karena (karenafagan) I went to a reading of the "Odd" chapters of The Grapes of Wrath last night. Santa Cruz Reads just won a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts so they've been doing a month of events based on the novel and Steinbeck. It was a great reading and it prompted me to pick the book up. It's really good so far.

I haven't read To the Lighthouse, so I can't say. I did read Orlando, which is also a list book, and vastly preferred Mrs. Dalloway.

message 6534: by [deleted user] (new)

I just printed off the whole list and trooped over to the local library and picked my first three. Currently reading Angela's Ashes, and after that I will offiially start! Can't wait!! The first three books I have picked are The History Of Love by Nicole Krauss, The Art Of Fielding by Chad Harbach and There But For The by Ali Smith. God I love the feel of a hardcover library book with crinkle wrapping! My favorite sound in the world with a nice cuppa tea!!

message 6543: by Cherene (new)

Cherene I started Catch-22 and have been supplementing it with Everything Is Illuminated. I would say that this months group read is being heavily overshadowed by Joseph Heller.

Re-started The Forsyte Saga because I had a long break due to Kindle dying due to a gravity-related malfunction, and I felt I was away from it too long, almost a week I think.
