Greetings from London! Declan here. I am on a strict diet (nearly 20 years now) of studying the Serial Killers (non-fiction only), but still like to ask people what is the scariest film they have seen. I have asked over 50,000 people this question, and Stephen King novel-derived films get the most nominations from a single writer, with 'It' (the original version) and 'The Shining' both in the 'Top Ten' suggestions. Personally, I always recommend 'The Haunting' (1963 version ONLY. AVOID the 1990's version).
I guess you didn't get the message, Jason. I have deleted your 2 previous posts. Please refrain from self promotion spam. It is not allowed on HA. Thanks.
Welcome, Declan! The 1963 Haunting's an amazing film - one of my favourites - but I'm always torn on the actual scariest. It'd probably be between Carnival of Souls (1962), A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) and Inland Empire (2005)
Hi Benjamin, Welcome to you too.
'Carnival of Souls' is a fantastic example of doing more with less money (like the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre' - which is in the Top Ten). But I have to admit I would describe 'Carnival of Souls' as eldritch rather than outright scary. Not one person of the 50,000 people I have asked the question to, has ever mentioned it, but I suspect these days only one in 100 people over the age of 15 even know it of it let alone having seen it.
I haven't seen the other two you mention because, in a strange irony, I haven't been watching horror films for about the last 20 years....
Inland Empire isn't really a horror film as such (although that makes it no less frightening), but you're missing out on Tale of Two Sisters - fantastic film
Welcome new HA members!
@ Declan: The first movie I vividly remember (and still my personal favorite) is CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS. The original THE HAUNTING, is also in my top five. :)

Hey there, I'm Chris. Books that I still think about: THE OTHER, DANDELION WINE and THE SHINING. Looking forward to finding some recommendations here.
Welcome Chris. Be prepared for your TBR list to grow. There is nothing we love more at HA than to recommend books. :)
Hey Guys! Not a stranger to good reads! I use the website before purchasing any books.. I am into paranormal, vampire, sci-fi, and all other strange books... The latest book I read wasTo Pay With Blood
It was free on Amazon and it was actually a pretty good Vampire book.
Hello everyone! My name is Constanze, I live in Vienna, Austria, with my 3 kids and my husband and I've been a Horror Fan, ever since my big sister finally let me read her Stephen King novels. My favourites are IT and The Stand. I also like Clive Barker, E.A. Poe and Paul Tremblay. After reading A Head full of ghosts, I'm looking forward to his new novel coming up this year!Really like to try Brian Keene, Jack Ketchum and Poppy Z. Brite. Any suggestions, which novels I should start with?

Welcome, Constanze. Jack Ketchum was an amazing author that wrote some of the most disturbing and gut-wrenching stories I have ever come across. I'd recommend either The Girl Next Door or Red as a good place to start with him.
For Brian Keene, he literally started the zombie craze in the early 2000s with The Rising. I think you can never go wrong with reading the book that started it all. Other good ones of Keene's areThe Conqueror Worms and Dark Hollow.
Happy reading!

Welcome to HA, Constanze! Ken has you covered with good book recs, and I'm going to add The Secret Life of Souls just to add some variety to the Ketchum reads. :)
Ken and Char both gave great recommendations! I'll add a couple more of my own favorites. For Brian Keene, I love Ghoul and Terminal (though I've only read the original limited edition, not the one currently available, and there are significant differences). For Ketchum, while it is very difficult to read as a parent, Stranglehold is gut-wrenching and terrifying.

That one is lurking in my TBR pile, Char. I may have to blow the dust off that one.

Ha, seems like I've come to the right place! Thank you so much, for the warm welcome and the recommendations!
My name is Pete. I love reading horror, especially from the 80's and 90's. Looking to find some material from young up and coming authors
Welcome, Pete. This is definitely the place to expand your horizons with up and coming horror authors. Each month, we have two guest authors that we feature and they hang out with us all month, answering questions, and providing insight as we read one of their books. This month we have two authors that have made pretty significant splashes in the genre the past few years, Hunter Shea and Kristopher Rufty. You might want to check them out.
