Suraiya, I totally agree with you.
The fist dialogue between Aelin and Chaol was total science-fiction to me. It sounded so unreal, so uncoherent...
It seems as Maas has forgotten (or simply erased) completely her protagonists' characterization from the 3 previous books...
I'm really having a hard time reading it... :(

For me, the best book was Crown of Midnight. Absolutely LOVED that one!

Chapter 16: (view spoiler)[ It's been interesting enough so far, but the characters seem so different! I refuse to believe there isn't even a spark of connection or love between Chaol and Aelin. Even after what they went though, I can't believe emotion like that would die so fast. I also feel really bad for Dorian, trapped inside there. Hopefully by the end of the book Aelin can set him free. I like Nesyrn, but she will never replace Nehemia. (hide spoiler)]

I was trying to do just that and I got MAJORLY spoiled for something and I wish I could bleach my mind to unread it. Just thought I'd warn you so you didn't make the same mistake.

End of part 1: (view spoiler)[ So far I am really enjoying this book. It took me awhile to get into but I am liking it a lot more than Heir of Fire. In Heir of Fire I really didn't like Manon's POV but in this book I find it really enjoyable and interesting, I can't believe that Arobynn is dead. He always seemed one step ahead that I was expecting him to work out Aelin's plan. (hide spoiler)]

Up to chapter 68 (view spoiler)[ Arobynn found a way to cause trouble from the grave. I am glad that they were able to save Lysandra. I was very worried that someone was going to die at this point although I do have a feeling that someone is going to die probably Chaol or Dorian. The last part was so tense I was expecting someone to die and I am really glad that no one did apart from the King. I ended up really enjoying Manon's parts which surprised me as I really didn't like them in Heir of Fire. I am sad about Chaol and Aelin not being together but I really like with Rowan so I am not too disappointed. I am so excited for the next book and I can't wait to see what will happen. Chapter 65: (view spoiler)[ While I've always shipped Chaol and Aelin, I like her dynamic with Rowan. I feel like when she was with Chaol she was holding back because she was afraid of judgment, but I can tell she feels completely safe with Rowan and I think she needs that. I like how he's protective of her while also giving her space, because of course a badass assassin doesn't want to be smothered. I'm liking this more than Heir of Fire, and I think I'm at around a 3.5 or 4 star rating at the moment. The exchanges between Aelin and Rowan are making me happy. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 80: (view spoiler)[ I'm really glad everyone ended up alive. Will Dorian have to wear that ring for the rest of his life? I have the feeling that before the end of the book someone in the main group (Rowan, Chaol, Dorian, Nesyrn, or Lysandra) will end up dying, since so far nothing heartbreakingly tragic has really happened. This got SO much better in the past 100-150 pages or so. (hide spoiler)]

Chaol and Aelin - WHY IT HAS TO BE SO AWKWARD?!?! I ship these two sooo hard I don't get why it has to be that way, I hope they get back together!
Manon's chapters are so boring for me idk why..
And Dorian, oh poor Dorian.. I hate what that freaking hell of a kind did to his own son.. Even though I shipped Celaena with Chaol and not Dorian I still feel really bad for him..

I know enough to get by though! I'm remembering how much I adore Aelin; everything about her is bad ass and fabulous. I'm so nervous about this night with Aborynn is going to go! Up to chapter 56 (view spoiler)[ Manon is the most interesting to me at the moment. I know Aelin and Rowan are going to get together, although I am interested in their final plan. Adeion isn't a particularly interesting character to me. Chaol is okay, but I don't get into his head enough. Manon, though, is always plotting, and she's falling out with her Thirteen which could go terribly wrong, and I never trust the Matron. I find myself really looking forward to her parts! Dorian I wasn't so worried about, because we'd seen those glimpses of him when he wasn't entirely possessed by the demon. And obviously Aelin and Rowan were going to be fine. I hope we get to see more of Manon and Aelin together in the next book, because the sass between those two was AMAZING. I'm pretty happy with how everyone ended up, and there was just enough to get me excited to read more :) (hide spoiler)]

I didn't like Manon because I found her parts quite boring, and I wasn't interested in her character. It might have been because the first two books were all about Celaena and that was what I came for, so when a random witch was introduced I spent all of her parts just waiting for Celaena's part to come back. The same thing happened in Queen of Shadows. Her parts were more interesting in this book but I still found them boring. Once again I spent them itching to get back to Aelin. So all in all it may not have been the fact that Manon is a boring or bad character, I think I was just spoiled with the first two books when it was all about Celaena.

Even though everyone knows Aelin and Rowan are going to get together I DON'T WANT THEM TO! At first I shipped them, kind of, but I didn't forget for a second Chaol and I am Chaolein or whatever you call it shipper forever! I don't really like Nesryn and what is happening between them and I want the captain and the queen back...
I am glad Aelin deciced not to touch Dorian and I wonder what is going to happen with all the witches..

(view spoiler)[Overall, while I do mourn for what could have been, I realized how wrong they were for each other. Aelin was never free from judgment with Chaol, like she is with Rowan. And it took so damn long for Chaol to stop thinking of her as a monster when all she was doing was trying to survive. I'm glad he came around in the end, but I think he'll always resent Aelin a little bit because of just who she was and is. (hide spoiler)]
