Not much to go on, but The Witch of Blackbird Pond? It matches what you posted though. It's set in the 1600s. The main character moves to a Puritan community in Connecticut to live with her aunt and uncle. She teaches (new job?) and befriends a Quaker who is an outcast from the Puritan community.
Rosemary's Witch?
After moving into an old house in a small New England town, 9-year-old Rosemary discovers that the nearby woods conceal a 150-year-old witch, who once lived in the house and is using her magic to take it back.
Christine, is the girl a child, teenager, or adult? Is this aimed at kids, YA, or adult readers?

Duuude, isn't that the Spitfire Grill? I think we might have watched it when we were housemates in Buttonwoods. :D It wasn't based on a book so that may be why you can't find it.
