Keyword: Thought Experiments

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein - The ship of Theseus, also known as Theseus' paradox, is a thought experiment that raises the question of whether an object which has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. A similar concept, but involving more than two persons at any given time, is described in some detail in the novel as a line marriage.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle - The brain in a vat (alternately known as brain in a jar) is used in a variety of thought experiments that outlines a scenario in which a mad scientist, machine, or other entity might remove a person's brain from the body, suspend it in a vat of life-sustaining liquid, and connect its neurons by wires to a supercomputer which would provide it with electrical impulses identical to those the brain normally receives. In the novel, the character IT is a disembodied telepathic brain that dominates the planet of Camazotz (the brains do not have to be necessarily in a jar so long as the brain is isolated from the body).
