No idea what year the book was published :/ but I read it 9 or 10 years ago I think... Haha I'm not very helpful sorry
That's correct all we need is approximate year you read it. Was the boy in a wheelchair?

Ha, wow, glad the hunch was it! I've begun it a couple times, yet to read all the way through. :)
I think it was set on an island, and I'm pretty sure it featured a young boy who had some sort of injury or disability (possibly to do with his back?) He meets a wild girl who has amazing swimming abilities - not sure if it was a fantasy context, or if the boy just thought of her as a mermiad - the first time he saw her was in the water, she swam under his small row boat. She wears a handmade bikini, crochet or something similar. One part i remember clearly is about a large, mysterious fish that lives near the island, and they "help" a scientist to study it ( maybe :/ )... i can also remember a passage about the girl venting her lungs before a dive into the water, and how that was dangerous?
