How many books are you challenging yourself to read this year?
Are you meeting your target?
How many of these do you plan to be non fiction?

My target overall is currently 150, I'm thinking of changing as I have already broken 60.
I'm aiming for at least two books a month to be non fiction, I haven't read a lot of non fiction before so a big difference for me.

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm hoping to do 24 in total 12 of which I want to be non-fiction.

Currently I'm ahead of target but my university course just started so I'm expecting to drop behind!

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah yes those things that take us away from beloved books! Work is mine, do you think any one would employ me just to read?

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

My goal this year is 150. I went way over that last year, but I want to be more particular and read things more deeply this year. Of the 150, I want at least 25 nonfiction, but I probably will top that.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

that sounds really good Terri, we have very similar goals this year! How are you doing so far?

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh wow. Big target. How you getting on?
My TBR pile reaches the ceiling. If I did 10% that alone would probably take me a year! Though most January books were from that pile.

I've read 42 so far this year, I believe 3 were nonfiction. I get easily distracted from my TBR pile, because I am always finding new releases, and even some older releases I'm just now hearing about. And then, of course, there's the classics...

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes I get easily distracted. Plus I'm trying to do a few other challenges as well, I've got a title a-z and an author a-z. A genre challenge too.
I think I'm at 60 or nearly 60. I've got about 6 books I'm about to finish all at the same time.
I just started the game of thrones series too. They are quite chunky. So slowed me a little.

GeneralTHC | 18 comments I challenged myself to read 50 nonfiction books for this group this year. I've read I think 6 NF books this year so far, but those don't count obviously.

I'm like Terri: I'm trying to be more particular about what I read. Have the same pitfalls, too, hehe. I'm thinking it'll be about 100-book year. Last year it ended up being 163 of which 24 were nonfiction, but I had several re-reads.

About to read my first one for the challenge: Blood Will Out The True Story of a Murder, a Mystery, and a Masquerade by Walter Kirn

GeneralTHC | 18 comments Iasa wrote: "Chuck, Blood Will Quit looks like a good read!"

I'm about 40 pages in. So far, so good...

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Good to hear, high non fiction challenge too. Have you planned your list for the year or just going with whatever takes your fancy?

I plan... And then I visit a book store or a library (eyes widen, find me in a few days).
I've recently decided I could live in a book store. There's an independent one near me that's amazing. It's in a listed building that's really higgledy piggledy and you never know what you will find. It has a cafe and really cosy chair tucked in one of the corners. I could quite easily never leave!

It's generally just what I'm in the mood far. But there are several that I know I'm going to get around to when the mood hits me, for instance:
Dirty Wars The World is a Battlefield by Jeremy Scahill , The Wisdom of Psychopaths What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success by Kevin Dutton , The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot , The Mad Sculptor by Harold Schechter ,
Under the Banner of Heaven A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer , Wizard The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla Biography of a Genius by Marc Seifer
The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee , Empire of the Summer Moon Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C. Gwynne , The Lost Men The Harrowing Saga of Shackleton's Ross Sea Party by Kelly Tyler-Lewis , Alone on the Ice The Greatest Survival Story in the History of Exploration by David Roberts

Also wanting to add some political memoirs and whatnot to the mix. Oh yeah, I need to read Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela .

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

A few more to add to my to read list! I'm feeling a bit bereft. I just finished Game of thrones and can't get my hands on the second book till tomorrow evening earliest. I have no idea what I should read. I keep picking up all my currently reading an putting them down again.
I'm lost! I need to know what happens next.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

That's good Lorah, have you got any books in mind?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Think I'm going to have to alter my challenge amount! I'm already 42% of the way to my total and we're only in March! I did say 12 books originally, how many do you think?

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Help, help, help please! I'm not what you'd call technically proficient, and I'm having trouble tracking my nonfiction reads. My post comes up at the top of the home page with the #read and the %, but I can't figure out how to add new books. One got added automatically this morning, God knows how. But I should have 8 books and I only have 3 listed. I don't know how to add more. So then I tried just starting over with a new post, but it doesn't show goals/%. I'm sorry I'm so dense, I just really would like to get this straight! Thanks.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Terri. You need to choose a particular shelf that you will use to track which books you have read for the challenge (mine is called nonfiction2014). Then once you read a book assign it to that shelf and the total will calculate automatically.

Hope this makes sense!

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Good plan Iasa. I think I will aim for that!

message 19: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 09, 2014 01:20PM) (new)

Thanks, Vikki. I think I've got it figured out. The books weren't showing on the percentages and totals because some I had not specifically assigned as "nonfiction" (they were listed under science or travel, etc.). Anyway, problem solved! Can't wait for the group read!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Glad you sorted it Terri. I can't wait for the group read too.

message 21: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Mason (lmason17) Right, I've finally managed to decide on 10 non-fiction books this year. That's not very much, but it's probably the most realistic number in which I still stretch myself!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds like a reasonable number to aim for Lucy! I personally was aiming for one a month but am going to up that number as I am way ahead!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I always feel better if I meet a target Lucy, an uncontainable one just means I'm less likely to try again!

message 24: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments i am aiming for 5 non-fiction , and 5 fiction. i am a slow reader, though !

message 25: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments i have reading 1 non fiction book this Month.

message 26: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments i have finished reading 1 non-fiction this week.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep they're all nonfiction. Basically if it's true and not a story it's nonfiction.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I love learning new things. Lol

message 29: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments i tend to skim read non-fiction books or just dip into parts of these books for helpful tips / advice. That is the main reason i set myself a small target for my 2014 book challenge: that is for me to (completely) read 10 books this year.

message 30: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments cont...
i think i will alter it to 20 books ( fiction and non- fiction) for 2014.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Gillian, any targets a good one! Glad you've been inspired to read more. Which non fiction book did you just finish?

message 32: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments i just finished "The Easy Way To Clean." By Ian Stables. (i am obsessed with homemaking books !) i have poor health , so anything that makes it a little easier i appreciate.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Was it any good Gillian? Would you recommend it?

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I read something like that go oh my goodness what a good idea... And then promptly forget it...

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Me too Rose! Forever trying to improve on my housework!

message 36: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Mason (lmason17) Do any of you have any homemaking or housework NF recommendations?

message 37: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments The kindle book was rather short. It did not really make housework any quicker, although it helped me to clean better/ to a somewhat higher standard.

message 38: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments i recommend: "Cleaning Up the Clutter."
by Emilie Barnes.

message 39: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 9 comments This is my review of "Cleaning up the clutter" : i would recommend this book. It is quite short , but it does include some really helpful information on de-cluttering papers, etc, and getting into a good, regular, housework routine.(It includes quite a lot of recipes, which as i am English, i will probably not use.) ( Emilie Barnes is American .) i am a big fan of her books, as they include simple, economical ideas on improving the home. Emilie is an expert on organization. This book also has a plan for taking one's home "from total mess to total rest."

message 40: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Mason (lmason17) That's a great suggestion, thanks Gillian!

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I need one for a tidy mind at the moment! I'm so busy and all over the place. I don't know wether I'm coming or going.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I know the feeling Rose. You need that getting things done book by David Allen. I've just started implementing it again and have been able to relax for the first time in ages tonight.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds like a plan. I need to do something!

message 44: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina I've got 2 small kids at home so reading one book a month is a win for me :) But this month I managed to read 3...a book club selection, the group read for this group & a separate non-fiction book for fun. Unless it is for my fiction book club I tend to read non-fiction.
