ABANDONED. Children Hide Kitten from Father

Looking for a children's book - published in I think, either late 70s or the 80s. Two children (a boy and a girl, I think) want a kitten, but the father says he is allergic. They find a kitten, bring it home and hide it from him.

Do you remember anything else about the plot? Was it a contemporary (for its time) or historical setting? Can you think of any of the ways the kids tried to hide the cat?

There's a story similar to this but it's two twin girls and their dad and brother are allergic to cats.
