InYourFaceNewYorker I wasn't clear on something... Why does Uri shoot Misha? Misha says he realizes that Uri was saving him again... but how? Also, what happened between the time he was shot and when he woke up on the train tracks?

SmilingDork Maybe to save him. Or Uri had really turned to the dark side. I just finished the book monday and was a bit confused. I am decide=ing between those two theories. It is a toss up.

InYourFaceNewYorker But how would that have saved him?

Charles He shot his ear so it would look like he was dead, when he actually just fainted. Germans would have killed him if he was alive. So Uri saved him. And since Germans don't care about dead bodies, they just left him there.

Matthew Yes, by shooting him, he prevented him from getting on a train to the concentration camps, where he likely would have been killed. As it mentions at the end of the book, there was a uprising in the Ghetto shortly thereafter, led by Jews who stole German weapons and uniforms. I believe the inference we are to make is that Uri was a part of that uprising, rather than a Nazi collaborator.

Christopher Guys! I need help! I received a english assignment and I have to give 5 song s that could represent a part in the book for both Misha, and Uri! Can you help me please? I need songs, and singers, and how that resembles them, and the setting in the book!

I agree with Charles, we read this book in English last year and that is exactly correct.

I did something like this for extra credit... one of the songs I did was Wake Me Up by Avichi (when im wiser and im older uri is trying to help Misha when neither of them know whats going on) , Apologize by One Rebublic (when uri leaves misha alone in the ghetto), and I cant remember the other three

Alex I agree with Charles, also.
Remember, Uri shot Misha (Jack) the same ear that a jackboot had shot years previous (toward the beginning of the novel). Uri knew that that particular ear was already damaged (so he wouldn't be inflecting that much more harm on Misha). I really think Uri knew Misha would be mistaken for dead, left at the station, and given at least a slight chance at survival. He was always physically harsh on Misha to keep him safe (on more than one occasion he slapped him to keep him safe).

Abraham I agree, but uri says "die piglet"

Fatima Khan The only reason Uri shoots misha is to keep him alive cause when he gets shot in the ear it makes him faint for a couple of hours and the nazis think he is dead and leaves him there if Uri didnt shoot him the nazi's would have shot him sevral times so Uri really did save him and he says the harsh words to save himself and so the nazi's knows he has no regard to jews and doesnt care

I think Uri said that so others people that were there woudn't think that they are friends and Uri wants to save him by "killing" him.

Wenson Ater Time of thinking, Yes I to had thought Uri Wanted him to die,but after I realized Uri Grabbed him so another Jackboot or Flop didn't and then he "tried to kill him" what he really did was shot him in the ear purposely so he could live his life and make the jackboots think hes dead.
