It's time to vote for our April Classic Selection!

Please select a one book from our Classics Bookshelf and place your nomination here.

Nominations end March 7th at which point the poll goes up.

Please refer to this shelf of Books Already Read so that we don't nominate previous selections.

Let the nominations begin...

Julia (juliastrimer) I'd like to nominate Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett. We haven't read a play yet, and this is the goodreads blurb:

"A seminal work of twentieth century drama, Waiting for Godot was Samuel Beckett's first professionally produced play. It opened in Paris in 1953 at the tiny Left Bank Theatre de Babylone, and has since become a cornerstone of twentieth-century theater. The story line revolves around two seemingly homeless men waiting for someone or something named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a drama spun from their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as a somber summation of mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett's language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existentialism of post-World War II Europe. His play remains one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time."

Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart are just finishing a run of the play on Broadway; this video gives a short idea of their magic combined with Beckett's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUXtz...

message 8: by Lauri (new)

Lauri I will second Tara's nomination of Cakes and Ale.

message 9: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliastrimer) Hmm, I must be confused--do we have to second the nominations of others? I thought we all just made our own nominations and then voted.

I was in another goodreads group that required the seconding of a nomination before it could be considered, but I don't think Laura asks for that here.

Actually, no we don't have to second the nominations for it to qualify. If too many books, like 20 are nominated, then I may have to figure out a way to cull the list. But right now just one nomination would qualify for the b ook to make it to the poll.

Good choice Julia! I have not read many plays, and the ones I have read were required for school. So needless to say, I haven't read a play in over 12 years. Lol. My favorite play in school was Our Town.
Waiting For Godot sounds intriguing.
