Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I liked Mistborn just fine - gave all five three books 5-star ratings. Enjoyed it a lot more than most of what I've seen called wonderful prose.

Though Kay is a very good example (rarity) of beautiful prose that actually doesn't come across as pretentious. Most of the time I dislike authors that try to show me how much smarter they are with their flowerly prose, but Kay doesn't do that. His writing is simply art that can be appreciated by the higb-brow as well as simpletons.

Five books? I thought Mistborn was a trilogy?

message 53: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments I also think that prose, in and of itself, is largely subjective. What speaks to me about a persons arrangement of words, may not necessarily appeal to someone else. That's not to say that AMAZING prose won't be seen as beautiful by many, many people, but some prose is beautiful to specific readers, and not others.

So was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. ;)

message 55: by Chris , cookie guilt (last edited Mar 03, 2014 08:09AM) (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Eck...you're right. I guess the 5 fell out of my head because I was thinking of the stars.

Though there is a 4th Mistborn book that isn't part of the original trilogy The Alloy of Law.

Thanks for catching that for me...

message 56: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments LOL Becky...good point.

Nicely said, Luke. That's the attitude I have with what I read. If it speaks to me, it doesn't have to win a Pulitzer. Most of the time I find the great writing like that to be too distracting to actually enjoy the work.

Exception being Kay once more.

message 57: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Chris, I'd agree with everything you just said... with the exception that I didn't really go all weak in the knees over Kay's writing or his storytelling in the one book I read. It was good, but... *shrug* I expected to LOVE it, and I didn't.

message 58: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments And you read his best one too. Pffft. I think we determined that you were broken.

Let's call it even! There may not be five books, but there are apparently four. Thank you for making me aware! :)

message 60: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Chris wrote: "And you read his best one too. Pffft. I think we determined that you were broken."

It's the only explanation.

message 61: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I think there's another Mistborn book coming out this Fall.

message 62: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Chris wrote: "I think there's another Mistborn book coming out this Fall."

I believe that you are correct, and I'm super excited about it. I may have to sell my car to be totally into the pedestrian love that is the Mistborn series. :P

message 63: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Becky, didn't you read Tigana too?

(We were talking about The Lions of al-Rassan before)

message 64: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I haven't read Tigana, but I do intend to at some point.

message 65: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Now, that's wonderful prose.

message 66: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) ;) Of course, I feel like I haven't read anything in forever. I read like 6 pages of GOTM last night and felt accomplished. LOL

message 67: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments There are several writers that write like words play out in my mind. To me, that prose is some of the most beautiful, because it perfectly translates in my mind and allows me to GET the story. The funny things is, some of those books I haven't liked because of plot or characters lol.

message 68: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Becky wrote: ";) Of course, I feel like I haven't read anything in forever. I read like 6 pages of GOTM last night and felt accomplished. LOL"

I actually read a few chapters of TWOK last night (which is great for me if I got 50 total pages in). I'd been averaging a chapter a day, if that.

I'm liking the story, I've just had too many distractions and exhaustions.

message 69: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You and me both! I have actually been researching new cars lately. I need a new one. Mine is starting to be more hassle than it's worth.

But good gracious - there are so many options. I don't actually know why I'm driving myself crazy with it like this already... I don't plan on getting a new one for 6 months to a year or longer (and hopefully by then I'll have money to just buy the thing outright), so I have time to research... but I latch onto things and get fixated. *sigh*

message 70: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Oy...that certainly fits the bill.

I've been buying a house and we had the grandbaby over this weekend. Work has been tough because we're gearing up for our financial closeouts.

message 71: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, I don't envy you there. I don't even want to think about how my brain would be if I were house-shopping. O_O

I've got a full-on spreadsheet going of different vehicular options going, so that I can track and compare what I like and don't.

But the more I research, the more I find that I need to add to it, so I may have to redo the whole thing. LOL

message 72: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments You didn't like Lions of al-Rassan???!!!!

message 73: by DavidO (last edited Mar 03, 2014 08:46AM) (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) I read about one chapter every every book I'm reading a day, so this list isn't quite as crazy as it looks, but here's the stuff I'm reading this month so far:

Furies of Calderon,Promise of Blood,The Worm Ouroboros,The Book of Lies,The Golem's Eye,The False Prince,The Broken Kingdoms,Blood Song,Gregor and the Marks of Secret,The Crown Tower,The Colossus Rises,The Dark Tide,Batman: The Night of the Owls, and The Desert Spear

message 74: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I LIKED it... but just liked. I didn't love it. Hence the conclusion that I'm broken.

message 75: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments You're reading all of those at the same time??

message 76: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Becky - yes you might be. ;) That's one of the only books I've ever read and then immediately reopened because I couldn't bear it to be over.

Wow! How do you keep everything straight?

Off your current reads I've listened to The False Prince and read the Gregor books. Both were enjoyable. I tried the #2 in the False Prince and couldn't get into it this time around. I ended up abandoning it.

I have no idea. But I can't remember anyone's names in real life, so I guess that makes up for it. :)

Megan Kirby (megan_bright) | 2 comments I'm reading Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson, and am loving it so far!

message 84: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

message 85: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Becks, try Kay's Sarantine Mosaic. I think you might like that one better than Lions or Tigana.

That's TWO books though! I'm barely able to read 4 pgs!

message 87: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments I'm sorry :(

It'll pass eventually. Then you can read the Mosaic.

message 88: by Becky (new)

...What if it doesn't pass though?

At least you gave him a shot. I can't even work myself up that far. He's one of those authors where I think I really ought to try, but the blurbs + page length do nothing for me.

message 90: by Sinistmer (new)

Sinistmer | 212 comments I am not sure I would call myself a cultist, but I did enjoy Mistborn; for me, it's fun, quick reading. I liked Steelheart, but found Elantris.."clunky". I think I am starting to see what Niena and Luke mean though about his stories being copies of one another.

Okay...back to thread topic!

I am currently reading Red Rising. I just got The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America from the library and am eager to read it (it's been on my holds list for awhile). I plan to read The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making and whatever else catches my fancy from my library books/pile of books in my room.

message 91: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Yeah, speaking of the "pile of books in my room," I went to a bookstore the other day and ended up coming home with translations of The Odyssey and The Oedipus Cycle: Oedipus Rex / Oedipus at Colonus / Antigone, along with Watership Down and Things Fall Apart. All amazing, I know, but what even. Was I momentarily possessed by my high school English teacher?

I believe it's another set in the time of Alloy of Law.

That's so like me! But I'm always forgetting where I put things, forgetting to turn off the lights etc, but I can read several books at once or put a book down for six months and pick up where I left off because I still remember everything about it :)

Paul, I keep meaning to try Mieville, but can't make myself take the plunge. What is your opinion of his work? Is there a good starting point?

(this goes for anyone who's read anything by China Meville)

Maybe we suffer from a rare disease called bookpreferentitis, that causes the real world to be more forgettable than books.

message 97: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Oh, no she didn't.

message 98: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I was with you until the final sentence. LOL

I'm not sure if I'm one of the ones that told Colleen to read Mistborn or not, but at this point I'd tell her not to bother. She's already tried several of his works and wasn't impressed. Not likely to change with another try.

I get what you're saying. I'll still stand by the fact that it speaks to me, regardless to its quality. Maybe I'm a simpleton. Mieville speaks too far above my head for me to grasp it. Sanderson does speak to my level.

Whatever works. I do need to try some Glen Cook, btw. Been meaning to. I've tried a short story or two and liked it.

message 99: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Chris, I think you'll like Glen Cook. I enjoyed the short I read more than book 1 so I think that it's a series that gets better over time.

message 100: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Yeah, that's what I read. It was a short of a Black Company tale. It did have a Bridgeburner feel.
