Jill Tool | 992 comments Roux's take a little practice, that's all...lol...Sometimes mine still get a little lumpy and then I try and either smash the lumps on the side or get out my emulsion blender and zap the crap out of the lumps. Sometimes the recipes will tell you to much flour. Usually on that part of the recipe, I start off less and then add a little at a time until I have the constancy that I need.

Okay, if Roux is the pick for Sept., I'll put my order in.

Car's in shop. Got the estimate. Ouch! But it's something I must get done. Always somethin', PI's! :-/

Allison | 905 comments Roux sounds good for September - anybody want to ALSO make a pot of soup (any kind) and share the recipe? We could post those on a separate thread so we could print them to make :) and discuss. I have been trying to get the recipe for this amazing mushroom soup sold at a nearby restaurant here, Dulin's village Cafe. If I can get it - I will share.

Jill - read on, I'm ready for The Alchemists Daughter side discussion.

Recipe threads are fun. Would love an EZ to make lobster bisque if anyone has one.

We shared a Martha Stewart shortbread cookie recipe years ago. I cherish it as it was from a former member (and it's EZ LOL). I bake them nearly every Christmas. Always tasty and they come out great!

Got Alchemist's Daughter. Will get back on it.

Jill Tool | 992 comments I make a lot of soups in the fall and winter. I think a soup thread would be great!

Allison, I'm reading on right after I watch the last episode of The Astronauts Wife Club. Then it's back to reading, so far I'm liking it.

Jill Tool | 992 comments Your are more than welcome Tina. It's like I tell my three girls. Two of them live out of state and neither one of them has a nook or kindle, and they can't really afford to go and buy books. One of them lives in a small, small town and she said their library seems to be stuck in the 60's....so they don't get in a lot of the newer books. The other one, her Thang is a f-bomb of a human being (and that's me saying something nice about him) well let's just say there's a place for him and he's got the engraved invitation. Any ways, they both have the kindle apps and the nook apps and they use my account to read. My other daughter has her own Kindle, (my son in law got it for her for christmas a couple of years ago.) and her and share each other's accounts. Where she lives, the town doesn't have a library, the whole town consists of a post office, a convenient store that you can get gas, beer, pop, some groceries, coffee, and bait. Wanna talk about slim pick-ins in a town...lol

So we all share, even my daughter that has a kindle shares that account with her sisters. But unlike me, she doesn't buy them books that they want. I do, do that. That's why you see a lot of different genre's on my list. I don't just buy for me I also get books for the other two. and I tell them, if you see a book and you don't think you'll like it, then don't read it. Besides, it's my nook account, my kindle account, my money that buys the books, and that means, I will buy most of the books that I like to read or want to read, so deal with it.

So the way I see things everyone can read the books if they want to and can join in. I hate it where there's groups that if people are doing a buddy read together then it's just them that can discuss it, that's BS. Books are meant for entertaining, fun, passing time, and for sharing. Ok stepping off of my soap box......OUCH!!!!!! I think I just fell off and broke my leg!....only kidding.

You are so right, Jill. And thanks! Nothing like a group that excludes. That's so not what a group is about. If someone can't or doesn't want to participate that's okay. If they do want to, that should be fine too. Otherwise why have a group?

Now if someone is abusive, mean etc., then we pull them aside and have a discuss of tact, understanding. Maybe they have problems that are making them hurt. If they straighten up, fine. They come back inside. If they continue with abusive behavior then that's another story. As for The PI's, we all are way cool. No rigid rules needed here.

Your family has a great biblio and reading champion. That would be you! Rock on, Jill!!

Nope the side read is absolutely open to everyone.
I love the discussions here and look forward to everyone's thoughts.

Jill - shall we post a thread for the first few sections of Alchemists Daughter this weekend?

I got the Roux book yesterday on the Kindle so I am ready!

PGHfan - any recipe you would care to share would be wonderful! I make a crockpot Mexican Meatball soup that is really delicious and even better yet - make ahead & freeze! I could put that recipe on the thread....Ummmm - a crockpot simmering all day with yummy smelling Mexican spices and meatballs while you read and sip tea. Sounds like a wonderful day to me!

Ahhh Jill - that totally explains the amount of books you have to read. LOL - for every book I add, you add 5. I just thought you were preparing for retirement, lol. I have found several really interesting books, series by seeing what you are picking though so you are not only sharing your love of reading with your kids, you are sharing it with me too. Thank you!

Well, my Roux order is in along with Retired Witches Spell Book. They'll take a few days to arrive and I'll sign in ASA they get here.

As for hosting, I'll grab Oct. if that's good with everyone. And if someone wants to take on Sept. that'd be great. If not...well, we'll figure something out.

Yes Allison, I was just thinking maybe to post the discussion today. Since you're done with the book do you want to go ahead and take the lead, since I'm still reading it? I'm half way done, and should finish it this weekend. Starting tomm, I'll be on puppy watch. One is due and will deliver between sunday thru tuesday. I know that when labor starts I'll be locked in the room with her and have plenty of time to read, at least until she starts getting closer to delivery....Don't worry, I have every thing set up for her and I have almost everything ready for me.

I'm glad you are enjoying finding books that I add. I also use my goodreads to store the books that the girls find that they want to read. However, I did tell Bree that I was going to figure out how to block Amazon, B&N, and Books A Million on her computer. She the one that wants the most. Tren gives me barely any and she said she's more than happy to read whatever I have on the Nook or Kindle. But there are a few that she has said that she wants to read. One of them was Grey by E.L. James She read the other books in the fifty shades, as have I and I wanted to read it as well. So got that one for the both of us. Bree won't read them, she said there to erotic for her. There's nothing erotic about them compared to the books that Bree likes to read.

I'm also working on getting books for ALL the grandbabies so that the ones that can read will read them and those that haven't learned to read, their parents can read to them, ok, we all know Thang won't read to them.

I'm on it! I will start the thread for The Alchemists Daughter today.

Good Luck with Puppy Watch.

I have about 6 emails I get a day that are links to free books - have I given those to you yet? I do get quite a few books for free. I probably average 5-8 free books a week (sometimes more but I'm getting choosy :) ). I will give you those sites by message. Maybe there will be ones there that the girls (and you) would like. I also had some book suggestions for the older kids for you.

Thank you Allison! I'm sure the girls and I (Well I know I do) appreciate it, and hey I can't go wrong with free books either...lol

I do need suggestion for the Jake and Austin, there the oldest well Lauren is getting up into that category she'll be 6 in Dec. But finding books for the oldest two, other than Harry Potter, I don't know what series are really out there that the kids like to read. The Hunger games and there's another series that I can't remember are a little bit advance for Jake, so trying to find him a good series is hard....lol

Farrah's acting funny today, but she hasn't shown any signs that's she in labor, but I do think she's getting ready to start, we'll see what happens. I've got all my stuff ready as well as her's. When the time comes while she's in labor all I have to do is grab my Kindle, her and me. I've got everything that I'll need already in the room. So now the balls in her court, and knowing her, she'll keep it in her court, she's a little greedy that way. I know dogs deliver on their own and there's nothing really for me to do. I'm there just in case she runs into trouble, and also, because she's my favorite. She's my girl, her and I have this unique bond. I love all my dogs, but Farrah, there's just something special about her. My kids will tell you, that she's the favorite one, the chosen one, and my daughter Sami calls her the spoiled diva. She's just jealous because her and Farrah have the sibling rivalry going on...lol..

Please be well, puppy dogs...and cats all! I love me my animals. ;-)

My understanding is that Amazon has an app (or something similar) that allows you to read the books for Kindle on the computer as well. Do you already have a Kindle or Nook? I seem to remember that you do but are not using it yet, is that right? Be warned though - once you turn that "devil-machine" on your TBR will explode, lol. Mine did! And then once I found free books - well...needless to say it increased exponentially.

Allison, Thanks for the information. I do have a new Nook and an inherited ipad. I'm trying to figure out which one I want to keep. I don't want both. Just too many devices to mess with. And then there's making time to sit and figure it out. All these changes I am trying to keep up with. lol Thanks again for the 411.

message 77: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments There is a Kindle app for computers, Ipad, android phones all you need is the app and then an amazon account. Amazon also has this a Kindle unlimited for $9.99 a month and you can read all the books you want for free each month that you pay.

You can also get the nook app for everything listed above except right now you can read on your computer thats been down for two months, but rest assured there tech team is aware of it and are working on it. yea right for the last two months. Nook is going down hill fast. I've got both a nook and a kindle. but have recently switched to buying more books on the kindle then nook.

So there are options for those that don't have a physical kindle or nook.

Tina,
I would suggest you keep the Ipad. You are able to do more with it. It's more like a portable computer that can slip in your purse. Plus you can get the kindle, AND Nook apps on it for free. and you can read books on those apps on the Ipad

Allison | 905 comments Thought I would mention that the Pumpkin Spice flavored items are starting to show at the grocery stores and nothing makes me think of Autumn more than that scent. I got some Pumpkin Spice flavored coffee beans last week and made homemade Pumpkin Spice Lattes for my friend and myself yesterday. Perfect for the weather we had - rainy. So PI's stock up on the Autumntime scented/flavored goodies for the upcoming months of staying in the house and reading. Oh Darn, lol.

Allison | 905 comments Oh I love Fall the best I think. I always think of the smells of fresh, fallen leaves, pumpkins and mums.

I actually got the beans at Wal-Mart. They are the Red Barn brand and when you open the package the beans are quite "oily" looking with all the flavoring they have on them. They smell amazing! I got whole bean but they also have ground available.

PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE recipe:
Mix about 1 cup of fresh brewed, strong, Pumpkin Spice coffee into a mug, add about 2 Tbs of (in my case, Sugar-Free) Pumpkin Pie Torani syrup and then mix in 1 cup of hot (I don't have a steamer) vanilla creamer. I just microwave the creamer until it is hot. This makes a fairly large serving. Smells so good and tastes even better! 'Course, you could top with some whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg...I'm just sayin'...and break out the crystal Irish coffee mugs I'm sure everybody has, lol. Make it a decadent treat!

A friend of mine has a great recipe for chocolate chip pumpkin cookies. I have it here somewhere, I will find it and share it.

For our non coffee drinkers I also found at Wal-Mart: Bigelow brand Pumpkin Spice Black tea bags and couldn't resist, got a box of those too. I drink coffee in the morning but tea at night for some reason.

Allison, thanks for the coffee recipe, tea suggestion and offer for pumpkin cookie how-to. I like idea of "oily" beans as to me it means the beans aren't dried out like grounds get when storing in a too dry area. So yum-yum. This is all so good! Thanks again, Allison!

I think we could start the fall recipe thread anytime. It's almost Fall and we need to be prepared, right?

I know we have chosen a book to read for September (Roux) and we're doing really well with the side read discussion for August (Alchemists daughter) - did we have a sideread for September planned? Is anyone interested or is that too much with going back to school, upcoming Holidays, etc?
