Ernest Dempsey | 2 comments My name is Ernest Dempsey. I know that there are other authors who write under the same names as other people, but why do I have to put a post in here every time one of my books goes into goodreads? My real name is Ernest Dempsey. The other guy who writes under that name uses it as a pen name, and frankly it is kind of false advertising. He chose an Irish name but he's from Pakistan.
It's just frustrating.
Anyway, I need to add Chasing Comets and my newest thriller The Last Chamber to my profile.
Thanks.

Z-squared | 8575 comments Goodreads uses extra spaces to disambiguate authors with otherwise identical names. Your profile is Ernest^^Dempsey where ^ is a space. This prevents ALL books by Ernest^Dempsey from being dumped onto your profile. The tradeoff is either a) be Ernest^Dempsey with one space and get all of the wrong books added to your profile or b) be Ernest^^Dempsey with two spaces and manually move over your books to the correct profile.

Unfortunately, ONLY Goodreads uses this technique, so when mass imports from Amazon or other databases come into the system, any books that were not previously on Goodreads get dumped on the wrong profile. It's annoying but probably ultimately less work for you to ask librarians to move the right stuff over than to remove many more everytime we get a new database import (which happens fairly regularly).

One strategy that might help is to be proactive about adding your books to Goodreads as soon as they've been assigned on ISBN or ASIN. If YOU are the one that enters your book into Goodreads, you can be sure to enter the author as Ernest^^Dempsey. Then they will go to your profile immediately.

If you're still reading my ginormous essay at this point, I'll just end by saying both of your books have been moved over now. If you find anymore now or in the future, please let us know and someone will fix it ASAP.
