Most libraries do audiobooks over here, though the selection is usually poor, and it's not unusual for a lot of attempting to navigate a chaotic library full of people and obstacles to be required in order to reach the section where they can be found. Not to mention, they - and not just libraries - seem to forget that there's more to offering things for the blind than just having accessable materials, and the librarians (or other staff in other places) usually have no clue how to deal with a blind person. When thinking of accessability to the disabled, they should consider training for their staff too.

As for braille books, the main option for that is to get books from the RNIB's library, which means getting them sent to you by post. It's not as much hastle, since they come in bags with reversable labels that you just turn the label over and drop them off at the post office to go back. But it does take a while to get books that way, and you have to send them in plenty of time to get them back before they're due back, in case the post is slow.

Personally, I don't like borrowing from the libraries. Not everyone takes proper care of the books, and that's something that matters more with audiobooks and braille books, because audio CDs won't play if they get dirty or scratched, and pressing too firmly on braille - or squashing the books - makes braille impossible to read.

Interesting.
As I said before one of my subjects this semester ic Universal Design, in other words how to accomodate to the different user groups. And we talk about things like that.

I think it's great that you're doing so. It's good that people are starting to consider things like that.

I have to ask though: are you and your class basing your potential solutions on the world's view of disabled people only, or are you talking to disabled people as well? I ask this because there are common myths about disabled people, and public opinion is generally based on assuming these myths are facts.

I agree its a very important class.

Yes and no.
Our main teacher is "normal" and ablebodied, but at the same time she has a pdh in dyslexia, and today when we went to the NLB, norwegian library for braille(thats the official name but they supply people with dyslexia with books as well, and produce tactile books for blinde kids++) she seemed to know everyone.
And our curriculum is mostly articles by Tom shaekespeare, Ronald Mace ++. We have also had geust lecturers that work for different interest organisations(Adaption books, a organisation that makes braille books, easy to read books for people with downs, tactile books++).
Really enjoying the subject so far. Its actually the first time the subject is running, but I dont have any complaints.

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments Some examples of what I was saying:

1. "We put up braille signs so the blind know where things are, because all blind peple can read braille."

First of all. No, they can't. Many can, but not all. Also, braille signs are no good to even braille readers most of the time, because they either don't even know they're there, or know they're there somewhere, but not exactly where. You can't read what you can't find.

2. "We put a raised area on the pavement so blind people know where to cross the road."

Which is great, but you didn't line it up properly with the one on the other side, you put it far enough away from where the traffic light system is that there's no way they can be on it and keep track of the spinny thing on the bottom of the traffic light box at the same time (and don't get me started on how annoying using that to cross with is in the first place) or there's a post or something the blind person will walk in to right as they step off the raised area on the other side of the road.

3. "We offer assistance to blind people travelling alone."

Yeah, except the people giving the assistance have had no training at all on how to lead a blind person, and doesn't even think to warn of upcoming obstacles.

Ah thats what your talking about.
Yes we do discuss that not all blinde\deaf\disabled bodied are similar. Like the fact that not everyone reads braille.
We have a area in the class webpage where we post good and bad universal design examples. Like Building x only has a stairs NO ramp.
We also do a task where we ask ourselves " if I was blind how would my morning be difficult" that makes you think about all the places with no braille\soundsystem that tells you what subway stop it is. Or how hard it would be in the winter with the slippery ground if youre blind.
So yes we do focus A LOT on ALL the aspects different diagnosis\disabilities can have on your life.
Its also what we will be doing our exam on.

That's good that you think about stuff like that.

By the way, if you're ever dealing with one of those types of questions and want to actually ask a blind person, feel free to send me a message. I do mention this on my blog, but I'm always happy to help with that kind of thing, whether it be people doing classes like you are, authors wanting to write about blind characters, or people just wanting to understand. I've even done a couple of posts about things like that, like my one from Monday: http://ziglernews.blogspot.co.uk/2018...

I hope you don't think I'm saying anything bad against your teacher, or the way the class is done, or anything like that. I just want to help tell what it's really like for blind people, so people can understand, and can then help in ways that really do help. Even if it doesn't benifit me, it may help other blind people later, and maybe take people a step closer to helping people with other disabilities as well.

Thanks thats great. No off course you would have a completely other experience of it since you live it, so in a way you would be the best sourse. My teacher knows that she doesent have all the answers. Neither do I.
I saw the bloggpost, really interesting.

Random thought\food for thought:
Backstory, I recentkly bought a board game with a litterature focus, actually made in norway.(yes quite fun.) I tried it yesterday it was fun but not the best game ever.
You would have a question and there would be 4 options, a,b,c,d. Either it could be one right answer or three could be right. If you got 1 right you got 10 pints, if you got 2 you would get 20 if you got 3 you would get 40. If you got one wrong 0 points.
If YOU were to make a game based around litterature what would the rules be?
I think I would keep the set up from the game above but add more, like do a mix, so have a category charade based, one would be name as many books by author x in 30 seconds, a bit like that.

So Karen and Jenny always seem to guy to fun book signings together(in Tuscon espesially? I think) I can brag that we have a crimefestival here in Oslo,Norway.
I went today to a) firstly a short yet very funny crimecomedy written by a norwegian comedian with Hercule poirot,Saga Noren, sherlock holmes and others popping up to solve the murder.
b) I went then to some author interviews, 3 parts, first 1 american(Karen Coinne and Claire macintosh) and one british, then a norwegian one and lastly two swedes.
lastly I went to a crimequiz. We dident get many points but we dident come last so hey there is that. we got 25 pints out of 50.
Going tomorrow to a crimeimprov show.
Yes yes its early morning here in norway now but not really that tired.

About as much as it can. I ended up spending a few hours back in A and E because of an infection, and was sent back home with antibiotics, but that seems to have cleared up now. I think I'm mostly back to just the usual level of feeling exhausted and drained now.

Thanks for asking.
