Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments Apparently the scientific explanation has to do with how the color detecting cones in different people's corneas detect color in different ways in low lighting.
Very interesting phenomenon.

message 705: by W.J. (new)

W.J. Lennox | 100 comments I see white and gold too. Tried squinting, but it didn't make a difference to the colour :)

Marla | 366 comments Sounds like a joke...I see white and gold, but my daughter and her boyfriend see blue and black. Okay, I would love to hear the science behind this! I'll send it to my other scientist daughter.

I'm still not over this. Every time I take a quick break, I've been reading what I can to explain why. I just don't get it.

Between #thedress and the Llamas here in Phoenix, it was a crazy internet day yesterday!! ;)

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments I think - to simplify it as much as possible - it's got something to do with the way our individual brains are wired. Basically, it's just another example of how different people have different perceptions of things; a simplified way of showing that not everyone even sees or hears alike, so we shouldn't expect everyone to think alike.

I've over simplified the explanation here, but that's the gist of how it works; if I'm not mistaken.

I remember reading something to that effect a couple of years back, where the test included sounds, shapes, colours, etc.

Agreed!

message 716: by Marla (new)

Marla | 366 comments It also has to do with how our eyes adjust to the background. If we concentrate on (I think the dress) we over expose the background and it gets washed out to be white and gold. If you "see" the background then you see the blue and black dress.

Try scrolling down so you only see the bottom of the dress, then when you lose enough of the side part, the dress magically turns bluish. That's how I could see blue, but then when I looked at the whole picture, it faded to white and gold. It was freaky!

Sorry you have the flu... Hope you feel better soon! In the meantime, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and listen to audiobooks!

^ I'm so remembering the audiobook thing next time I get sick. I felt so crappy when I had the flu in December that I didn't read more then fanfiction and even that was limited. Hope you feel better Oda, sucks when you come back from a trip feeling crappy.

If you have an ereader that has text to speech, or read out loud option of some other type, that works too. ;)

W.J. Lennox | 100 comments Get well soon, Oda. We all had flu here not so long ago, so feel your pain. Hope you didn't pick it up while you were in York. Did you have a good time?

Have only been once with a friend, but loved it. The Shambles had lots of quirky shops then, including some great fudge shops. York cathedral was worth a visit, although the Jorvik Viking Centre was a bit disappointing and very overpriced. The highlight for me was fab afternoon tea in Betty's, and a spooky ghost tour.

Hope you'll be on the mend real soon!

I went to Jorvik the last time(2006) this time I went on a walking tour, the choclate story(choclate museum, very nice place, great guide) and I espesially love all the second hand stores(where I bought most of the books). I bought around 25 books on the trip.
Health wise: I am getting better. Defently better than yesterday and the day before. I got the flu on thursday the day before I left york, but still could have been worse. Getting sick the day before you leave isent that bad of a deal. Some People get sick early on in travelles.

W.J. Lennox | 100 comments Oda- Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better.
You're right that being ill would have been worse on the first few days of your holiday. I've been there & still sore about it to this day - got flu on my 40th birthday while in Paris. Ended up spending most of it inside a hotel room feeling like death :(

The chocolate museum would have been right up my street! Will need to go back to York one day & make sure that's on the itinerary, nom, nom!

At least you brought back a hefty pile of books to make up for feeling ill. Hope you didn't end up over your luggage allowance though, lol!

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments Today's been a pretty good day, though I'm disappointed cloud cover stopped hubby seeing the eclipse and getting photos for me. Still, the outing down to sit by the ocean for it was nice; if a bit chilly (I had a flask of warm peppermint tea though, so that helped me to not feel the cold so much).

Yesterday was another matter... *Sigh*

W.J. Lennox | 100 comments It was the same here in the Scottish Borders, Victoria. More of a cloudy crescent moon than a solar eclipse. It was cloudy the last time I saw, or rather didn't see one in 1999 on holiday in Germany. Also, didn't see the northern lights this week either, although some parts of Scotland had a fantastic display :(

I seem to be destined to miss out on these celestial events, yet rain clouds follow me around as if I was a god. What gives?

(A wee Douglas Adams reference there, lol!)

Have a good weekend everyone :)

I'm having the same issue... It's always too cloudy when I need a clear sky to see something. Or, rather, for hubby to see it and get me photos to post. Though, I was lucky in that not only could I still see during one some years ago - I think the 1999 one you mentioned - but it was clear enough for us to see it from where we were in Wales. Of course, the idea of getting photos didn't occur to me then, and I seem to have failed to capture everything since, LOL!

Cloud cover here today was so thick the only clue we had - other than my checking the times online before we went out - was a slightly more darkened sky, and the sea birds going nuts; we couldn't even see where the sun was (though knew roughly where it should be, since we've taken several shots along the coast on clear days, so know where the sun rises, etc). Naturally, the clouds thinned or moved on about lunch time... Wen it was too late!

W.J. Lennox | 100 comments Typical British weather, Victoria. The closest I came was watching it on the BBC Stargazing programme, which showed live images from the Faroe Islands. It was pretty special, just a shame I couldn't see it in person. Ah well, there's always the next eclipse in the USA in 2017 and then Egypt in 2027, although if I had the choice I'd be heading to Norway instead to see the Northern Lights - that's higher up my bucket list!

I just got back from seeing Cinderella, love, love, love it. WEll, I should say it is now called " how to get kit the apprentice to propose to you" aww.. Richard madden, soo handsome! :D:D Swoon..Swoon...
Other than that same old really. I havent gotten rid of my cold(the one I got last week) going to relax more this coming week, and hope that drives the Cold away.

I love to watch eclipses, but we didn't have it at all here in the U.S. Or if we did, I missed it entirely. And we had sunny skies! ;)
