SOLVED. Young boy gets teleported to the future in the desert. [s]

A young boy gets magically teleported to an alternate reality when hiking across a desert for a Boy Scout mission. The world he ends up in is similar to Earth but not quite the same - a lot of things are miscolored. He befriends some animal that looks like a monkey I think. He grows older throughout the novel and eventually gets into some huge battle against someone. At the end, he finds a piece of scrap that says "Coca Cola" on it and he realizes that he's in the future, not an alternate reality.

That's about all I can remember but I remember loving this book. Does anyone know what book I'm thinking of?
