Starting this book a little early since I just finished my last book and can't wait until Saturday to start!!
Got a copy from my library the other day and will be joining you guys. I've never read it or seen the movie! I'm so excited to read this extremely famous classic. While it's been on my to-read list for years, I'm not sure I ever would have gotten around to reading it if it weren't picked as our monthly group read, so very happy it was - this group's various discussions motivate me to read so many more books from so many different genres than I ever have before joining :]
I read this book early and really enjoyed it. Can't wait to discuss and see what everyone else thought though.
I'm looking forward to reading this. I don't think I've ever seen the film but after reading I'm hoping to watch it too!
I will be joining you guys for this group read and I'm really curious about the book. Like Brian said, I'm not sure I'd've picked this one either, since it's not my usual genre, and I've kept myself as far as I could from the film (due to my allergy to Jack Nicholson :P). But it's always great to branch out to new books and genres, so thanks to everyone who voted this as the monthly read!
I started the book a little early and can't wait to start discussing it! I saw the movie several years ago and I don't remember it well. Reading the book is making me want to watch it again.
I am very excited to read this as the group read. It's a lowly book to read and re-read. I have a copy ere at home but it's issuing one page toward the end as I used it for an art project. Oops!
I can still read the beginning until I reach the missing page at the end.
A *great* book to read and re-read! Auto correct has got me again and I can't edit my post on the mobile app!
I originally read this novel--Unabridged Audio Edition--in August 1999. I'm currently rereading it on Kindle. Magnificent book. Key had a wonderful way with words that is pure pleasure to read.
Well I started this book a couple of days ago. I have finally found a book this year that I will not be finishing. I loved the first two group reads. But this one I just can't get into. I have read the first 4 pages and I usually don't wimp out that quickly but I can't stand the writing style at all. I have a large number of books to read this month and can't afford to read one I just don't like. Just not my genre at all.
Just picked it up from the library, will be starting it tonight :)
I just started reading tonight, and I look forward to talking with you all about it! I've never read the book or seen the movie, so I'm glad it was chosen as a group read.My mom has seen the movie but hasn't read the book, and she keeps asking me whether this thing or that thing is the same as in the movie... If I cared more about spoilers, I might be upset, but it's giving us something great to talk about! My mom loves to read as well, but hasn't had time to read much recently, and we generally have very different tastes, so this is wonderful.
After reading this book, I noticed today's "Quote of the Day" and thought it was fiting...Laughter is wine for the soul - laughter soft, or loud and deep, tinged through with seriousness - the hilarious declaration made by man that life is worth living.”
— Seán O'Casey
Thanks! This is one book I probably would never have read. I saw the movie years ago and didn't like it. The book as do most books gives a better look into the minds of the characters. I am going to watch the movie again with better understanding.
Hmmmm while I realize that this was last month's read - I might take another go at it. I had bought it because I love the movie so much - several years ago and I couldn't get past like page 30. I just felt really turned off by the narrative voice but I looked at part 1 of the discussion and saw that I gave up too soon. I'll give it another chance and I only wish that I could have seen this last month and participated!
