SOLVED. Chidrens book about a lie detector-like device

I am looking for a child's book or perhaps a short story. It might be called "The (blank) machine" or "The (blank) device" and the author's last name might be (or sound like) Tim Abel. It is about a device that translates what people say into what they're actually thinking. It is funny. The characters include Darla, Suzy, and Conrad. (The spelling might be different)
