Welcome to Carnegie-Stout's new Virtual Book Club! We'd love it if you took a moment to say hello. As a conversation starter, what are your favorite books to read?

I'm a Readers' Advisory and Reference librarian at Carnegie-Stout. I love science fiction, historical romance, fantasy, memoirs, comics, and audio books. My favorites tend to be a little off beat, but my all time favorite is probably Jane Eyre.

Michelle (michelleob) | 17 comments Hi Folks--I am a library assistant at Carnegie-Stout. I prefer literary fiction but also really enjoy mysteries and historical fiction. I love The Stand by Stephen King and Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver and lots of stuff in between!

Hello! I am a library assistant at Carnegie-Stout. I will soon be getting my Masters in Library/Info Science, so reading is totally my gig. My all-time favorite reading experience is the Harry Potter series. I have been very much into YA books lately- particularly post-apocalyptic/dystopic books. I am developing a taste for fantasy/scifi adult books - as I realized some of my love for Harry Potter might be because of these fantastical elements. I am quite surprised it took me this long to figure that out!

message 5: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) Hello. I don't actually work at the library, but I visit about once a week to feed my fiction addiction. My reading tastes are all over the place, although I lean toward thriller and suspense.

message 6: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Hey all. I am a librarian at James Kennedy Public Library in Dyersville. I will read anything that sounds good. I tend to read cozy mysteries and inspirational fiction a lot and I avoid horror at all costs.

Bethany Lois (bethany_lois) | 1 comments I am not a librarian. I just live in Dubuque and like to read. As far as my book preferences, I lean toward page turners, of any genre. My life is noisy with 3 kids and I have to be able to read through the chaos.

Hi all, I'm Amy from CSP-L. I am a Reference & Reader's Advisory librarian. I tend to lean towards urban fantasy, paranormal romance, romantic suspense, historical romance,YA fiction, and fantasy. I do read the occasional mystery and thriller. So hmmm, a little bit of everything it seems. I have this habit of getting fixated on a series and then I have to read every book in that series right away.

Jason Burds | 1 comments Hello, I'm Jason from C-SPL.

I tend to read more nonfiction war stories and fitness books. I did enjoy the Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games books. My favorite comic series is The Walking Dead.

I am currently forcing myself through the Game of Thrones books.

message 10: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 16 comments Hi, I'm Andrew from C-SPL. I mostly read comics/graphic novels and lit fic. I go on the occasional jag of YA fantasy, but generally end up feeling a little unfulfilled as what I really want is a fantasy novel that feels just like playing Dungeons & Dragons.

message 11: by Becky (new)

Becky Canovan (beckiejean) | 3 comments I'm Becky,Reference & Instruction Librarian at UD. I read YA books almost exclusively. Every once in a while I read a real live adult book just to prove I can. I love fantasy, history, mystery, romance, audiobooks, graphic novels. I'll basically read anything from the YA section.

Danielle Phillips | 6 comments I'm Danielle and I have my own live-in reference librarian named Andrew who is super excellent. Also, I like books and will yammer on about them at remarkable length if allowed to do so. I'll read any genre if the book strikes my fancy and there's a story told in it, but sci-fi, fantasy, and classic literary fiction (think Pride and Prejudice or Jane Eyre) are my big'uns, with graphic novels and YA fic deserving honorable mentions at least.

message 13: by Chel (new)

Chel | 6 comments I'm Chel. My first library job was shelving books at a small central Iowa library. I was nine years old, and I got paid 35 cents an hour. I would have done it for free. These days I'm an Adult Services' librarian at Carnegie-Stout. I read historical romances, mysteries, herbal anything, fantasy, books with dragons and a mishmash of whatever catches my attention.

message 14: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 16 comments Yes, you can do that on your home computer! It's not terribly complicated, but a bit more so than can easily be explained here. Have a look at the website (http://dubuque.lib.overdrive.com/) and stop by the reference desk for more help (a phone call could also work, but it's easier in person).

Welcome Jamie Lynn! We hope that more non-librarian Dubuquers find their way here in the future, but us librarians just can't pass up a good book club :)

I've read over your intros. Now here's mine. I am not a librarian although my mother always wanted me to be one. Instead, I'm retired. I do a lot of reading these days including romances, paranormal, fantasy, etc. I'll read anything that isn't too tense, unpleasant, etc. as I read to distract myself from pain. If I get tense, the pain increases whereas when I'm relaxed, it lessens. I'll give the books you've selected a try. In fact, I look forward to reading them. And to future discussions.

Welcome Irene! We hope you enjoy the discussions and reading suggestions.

message 18: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 12 comments I'm Andrea and I'm a library assistant at Carnegie Stout. I enjoy a lot of mysteries and am reading a lot of YA at the moment. I like it when the plot keeps moving to keep me interested. I am also a teacher for young children, so any good picture book is a great read for me. I am trying to venture out into new genres also.

message 19: by Emily (new)

Emily I work at Clarke University full-time and part-time at the library. My tastes tend toward current fiction (as in taking place in current times), memoirs (more so than biographies) and some popular authors (Stephen King, John Grisham). I also read some random non-fiction. Currently I'm whipping through everything by Jonathon Tropper.

CrazyCatLady wrote: "Is there a book discussion for August? Does this group do book of the month discussions?"

Hello and welcome! We do a new discussion every month, sometimes they are titles selected by staff at Carnegie-Stout Public Library and sometimes they are voted on by the group members. For August we're having two open discussion topics: Suspense and Young Adult. We encourage everyone to share their favorites in these genres, or to try something new!
