Try the Black Company by Glen Cook. That series has this going on in it. The Black Company is the first book in the series.

Hm...I just looked at the preview on Amazon and it doesn't seem to start with the scene you describe. It's still a good read, though.
It's a fantasy that begins with a man who is blindfolded and taken in to kneel before some sort of tyrant-type of leader. While there, he speaks the leader's true name--something that was almost impossible to find, and is forgotten as soon as it is spoken. Mild spoiler for the prologue: Speaking his name in person is supposed to give him control over the leader, (view spoiler)[but he's been tricked, because the leader isn't actually there in person. (hide spoiler)]
If I remember right, the story may have then moved on to actually be about a girl who is searching for the leader's name as well, but I may be combining memories from another story.
I thought it was Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson, but I just checked it out, and it isn't the book I was thinking of (though I'm never opposed to anything by Brandon Sanderson). Any ideas of what book this may be called?
