Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments The theme for April and May will be travel literature.

Nominations will run for a maximum of 7 days or until 7 poll-contestants are chosen. In order to move into poll a book needs to receive a second vote. So second if you are not nominating!

Please stick to one nomination OR one second vote per person.

Should you have a question, feel free to ask in this thread!

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I've heard and read many great things about this Polish journalist, poet, photographer and writer as of late and of this book in particularly. So here's my nomination:

The Shadow of the Sun by Ryszard Kapuściński.

I second this.

I read this so won't join in if it wins but it's an absolutely fantastic book and highly recommended.

Gill | 5719 comments In the interests of there being a poll I nominate Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan.

I'm not sure if that counts as travel literature. If not, I nominate Between the Woods and the Water.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Oh good, I thought I was going to have to bribe someone into nominating a book ;)

'The Return of a King' sounds great, but I think it might fit into a History themed group read better possibly (which there will be sometime this year for sure).

'Between the Woods' sounds just as good and clearly fits the criteria, shall we go for that one then?

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments I nominate the book that I had recently included in my To Read list: Bruce Chatwin's The Songlines. It will also cover the theme "Around the World"for Australia.

I will also be happy if THE SHADOW OF THE SUN wins the poll.

Leslie | 16369 comments I have several books in this category that I would like to read, but will nominate Tracks which won the 1980 Thomas Cook Travel Book award.

I will second this, looks good, and it's in my library.

I'm not expert enough to nominate anything, but I want to see what turns out!

message 12: by Pink (new)

Pink I feel in a similar position to you Laura, I can't think of any book for travel literature that I've been wanting to read, or know much about, but I too look forward to seeing what others come up with!

message 13: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I'm not really sure if you think Gerald Durrell 's book are suitable, as they're very lightweight. They are very amusing and informative reads though, so I will nominate A Zoo in My Luggage (which is the next one I was going to read - cheeky!)

I don't see why not, Jean!

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Sure Jean!

So far we have 6 great nominations, of which 2 edit: 3 have been 'seconded':

The Shadow of the Sun by Ryszard Kapuściński (seconded)
Tracks by Robyn Davidson (seconded)
The Songlines by Bruce Chatwin (seconded)
Between the Woods and the Water by Patrick Leigh Fermor
A Zoo in My Luggage by Gerald Durrell
Alone on the Ice: The Greatest Survival Story in the History of Exploration by David Roberts

Leslie | 16369 comments I can't second as I have made a nomination, but Gerald Durrell's books are indeed amusing and informative!

Patrick Leigh Fermor - did he write books about sailing? I think that my dad got one or two of his books for Christmas... (I looked at his author page and remember now who he is - he was a British liaison officer with the Greek resistance fighters in Crete during WW2)

Erica | 945 comments I second The Songlines - it looks really interesting

message 18: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Sorry Leslie - I probably put the kaibosh on that for you!

(Leslie had suggested nominating Gerald Durrell for this, and I had expressed reservations. Later I reconsidered. Since we had both thought of him, others might enjoy his work too! :)

No problems - I, like you, nominated something I have planned on reading anyway (Tracks is the nonfiction book I plan on for Around-th-World Australia)...

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Just as a little reminder: this thread will close by Friday night, for the poll to go up on Saturday. So if you'd like to nominate a book or if there's a book that you would like to go see into poll that hasn't been seconded yet, now is your time ;)

This is a book I would like to read some day, so I hope that you nominate it again.
