SOLVED. YA Fiction: A teenager who has an affinity with animals and lives on private island in Canada I think? [s]

Okay so my memory is pretty patchy. This girl who is in high school lives on an island off the coast of (I think?) Canada. She has a paw mark birthmark on her somewhere. Her family run the animal control/shelter of the island and basically has an affinity for helping the animals and healing them. There is some sort of conflict with outsiders/hunters. She also tries to get to know more about her inuit/native ancestry in which she may be also be from a long line of shape shifts (the rest of the island may be too?? possibly??) I think the end of book one there is a forest fire on the island and everyone is being evacuated and she may have been kidnapped.

I am pretty sure it is The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong. It is a trilogy and the first book seems to fit your description.
