There's a good discussion about heroes (particularly the alpha one) on the Erotic Romance board over at Amazon. Some of the ladies, in more eloquent terms, were able to describe the sort of 3 dimenional alpha male I seek (but hardly ever find) in romance. I did post a reply and I did mention my hubby (again!), but I said pretty much the same there as I said here. What I thought might be interesting is the other ladies' descriptions & opinions.
I define an alpha as any man who is confident in himself, his beliefs and what he wants. I know there are extreme alphas (and I love those too, especially in historical romances--cue Mason, Johansen, and Woodiwiss) but most romance books (barring few) I've read have had my definition of alphas. The hero might not be the richest, most attractive man in the story, but he sure makes the reader WISH she were the heroine.
Thanks for all the great info on Betas and Gammas, Lady D.! A few of us in the Nothing But Reading Challenges are talking about Carter in
and someone hyperlinked to this discussion. I haven't read everything here, but I agree about Cary Grant being a beta in Bringing Up Baby. Such a great movie!
Thanks, Lisa Kay. I obtained the info from All About Romance, which is my favorite romance website. I have a real soft spot for Beta heroes, and Carter is the King of my Betas!
