Ruth Eblen | 4 comments I am looking for a book that my third grade teacher read to me back in 1979. The story was somewhat similar to City of Ember, in that it was centered around a people group living in a dying city that really didn't realize there was a greater existence on the outside. But this city had a dome over the top. They also had moving sidewalks. The city was breaking down and smog was filling the air and the moving sidewalks were stopping. But everyone was afraid and no one knew how to get to the outside. But also like City of Ember, there were children who are the heroes to find a way out.

I would appreciate any help you could give me in finding this old treasure.

Diana Welsch | 530 comments There's a lot of books similar to this. Could it be Out There by Adrien Stoutenburg?

Beyond the Dome by Alan Meacock looks like it could fit, but I can't find many details about it.

bookel | 4025 comments Ah, here is the answer.

"science fiction book with humans living underground, moving sidewalks"

Suzanne Martel's "The City Under Ground" "In the underground city flowers are extinct and children eat pills instead of food! It is the year 3000. One day Luke discovers a doorway to the outside and ventures into a world devastated by nuclear attack 1000 years ago."

Which was on the list I mentioned above, Underground/dome to outside - children's/young adult science fiction.

Outside by Andre Norton could also qualify.

Cupcakedoll | 322 comments H M Hoover is a she? O_o It's always so weird when you guess the writer's gender wrong and find out years later. Anyway, thanks for link.

Rainbowheart | 28688 comments I know this is abandoned, but I'm also pretty sure it's The City Under Ground.
