SOLVED. Overpopulation control novella

My teacher in highschool read this novella and I remember few random things from it.
All cars were on tracks, no one drove themselves.
People took vacation outside the city, and had to leave through tunnels that randomely closed and acid was used for population control (once they opened again everyone and everything inside was completely gone). When the family in the story returns to the city, the tunnels shuts right after they exit, capturing the car right behind them.
I also remember a part where a boy or man got out of the car once outside the city, where he stretched and remembered that it was forbidden to take up that amount of space.

Anyone? I would really like to read it again!
