7 identical profiles for same author

I'm not sure what is going on here. This author: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... (Michael^H.^^Smith) has 6 other profiles on GR, with the same 3 spaces:

Since the first Michael^H.^^Smith profile was last edited in July 2014 (no edits that I can see for the others) I would have expected at least the 5 empty profiles to have been removed by now. I also don't understand how it is possible that there are 7 identical profiles. The name is pretty straightforward, no diacritics or anything.

Any ideas?

It is one of those strange things imports can do sometimes. If you save those profiles without an edit, it will give the usual profile merge page.

I've been running across these more and more lately, and trying to figure out a simple way to make them go away. And there it is in front of me the whole time.
