Felina I just finished Go Set a Watchman and started The Cold Dish. Good so far. :)

I just read through a thread in which the reviewer didn;t like Watchman.

Her thread was first a discussion between friends and then erupted into a BS name-calling, mud-slinging match.

Why? Because people were saying they had no interest in reading the book. The name calling and assholes were out of control. :(

message 53: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Where's the thread?

message 54: by Felina (new)

Felina Meh, it's like any story that's controversial. People will get heated. This one is political plain and simple. And in our current climate it actually hits home in a few places. But like any political debate, things get ugly quickly.

Alvin (solidocelot) | 3 comments About 3/4 way through I Am Jonathan Scrivener and if nothing else jumps to the front of the line afterwards will start Skinshift ... I think

message 56: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Right. I found it, and that thread was always going to get ugly, just by the nature of the reviewer, I think. They're controversial all on their own.

Does the person's name start with a 'K' or is it a different thread?

Maybe so, but that reviewer wasn't participating in the thread. But you're probably right.

I've heard such great things about this one. I need to move it up on my TBR list.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I might join you if you do! I read the audio and I'm currently suffering from book hangover (so good). So I bought the HB and I'm about to do re-read.

I do.

My HB arrived yesterday and I was all caressing it...

O_O

The paper they used for the dust jacket is so nice.

message 67: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 18 comments With so many positive comments on The Martian I just logged into my library to get it. I am #43 in the hold queue :(

Scalzi is definitely worth checking out. A terrific storyteller and very interesting guy. Old Man's War (his first novel, I believe) is really good. I have also read the first collection from his Whatever blog, Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded.

Not a problem! I never want to stand between someone and a good read.

I love that title.

Sinistmer | 212 comments Finished The Way of Kings--it was awesome. I was so impressed with the characters and the plot. I must get my mitts on Words of Radiance.

Just started [book:The Gates|6411440.

message 72: by Felina (new)

Felina My husband is so in love with The Way of Kings. He's been begging me to read it for ages. But it's such a chunkster that I'm afraid to start it. But of course, I started Dreamcatcher a few months ago and he got mad at me. I just said that the rules don't apply to King...though the rules are starting to not apply to Sanderson as well. :)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Dreamcatcher is a pamphlet compared to TWoK.

message 74: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments Currently having fun reading 'The wreck of the Charles Dexter Ward' by Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear, in The Mammoth Book of Best New SF 26. This is a good Lovecraftian tale with a female protagonist, none of the racial stereotyping typical of Lovecraft himself and some humorous name-dropping. Reminiscent in some ways of the movie Event Horizon.

Kat Desi (katdesiwrites) | 54 comments Currently reading The Gunslinger.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments AFter being disappointed with my trashy romance, I hopped into The Fear Institute, wherein Johannes Cabal takes on the Old Ones. I think it's my favorite of the series so far.

Unfortunately the library didn't have the book I wanted when I went Monday, and my holds are taking forever to come in... so next up is either Deadpool Volume 1 or The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey - probably the latter just by dint that it'll be easier to read Deadpool at home, since the book is on the large side.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Reading random trashy romances until I get over this incredible book hangover left from THe Martian.

Every time I try to read something with substance...I realize I don't want to visit that place right now. I'm still hanging out on Mars with Mark Watney.

Didn't know about the Johannes Cabal series before - looks interesting!

It's a quirky little series. Kind of macabre, in a way, with lots of wry humour.

message 88: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I've kinda stalled out on my Dune re-read, and my headset broke that I used to listen to Blood of Dragons.

But I'm almost done with The Cold Dish, the first of the Longmire books. And I'm almost halfway done with a Beta read of The Death of Dulgath, the upcoming Riyria book.

message 89: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Oooh! Chris is beta reading! Nice!

message 90: by Felina (new)

Felina How are you feeling about The Cold Dish? I'm about 1/3 through the audio and I'm loving it. George Guidall is my favorite. He could make Twilight a decent read.

message 91: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I like it a lot, Felina. It did take some getting used to, but I think that I had an easier time appreciating it because I've watched the TV series.

And I agree on Guidall. This would have been good to listen to him read.

message 92: by Felina (new)

Felina This book just makes me so excited to watch the show. :)

message 93: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Did you watch Battlestar Galactica?

Starbuck = Vic

message 94: by Felina (new)

Felina Ohhh yessss!

For a second I was thinking you meant Vonnie (excuse spelling errors on names as I am audioing) and I was like...no. But Vic, perfect.

I forgot this was a show that I can go look up actors.

message 95: by Felina (new)

Felina Wait? Who plays Vonnie?

Is there no love interest in the show?

message 96: by Felina (new)

Felina I love Lou Diamond Phillips. I'm happy about that casting.

Sinistmer | 212 comments I am finishing up The Gates. It is cute, but I don't like it as well as I liked the other book of his that I've read. Some of the writing reminds me a bit of Pratchett.
