SOLVED. Boy accidentally kills another boy, gets trapped in cave, is saved by an old woman? [s]

My boyfriend is driving me nuts with a book he's trying to remember. He read it around 2005. Basically, a boy gets driven away from a town because he accidentally kills another kid. While running away, he gets trapped in a cave, and the townspeople barricade the entrance so he can't get out and leave him to die. He is in the cave for a long time, and then an old lady (or a witch) shows up who gives him water and saves him, but she wants something in return. They end up working together, and eventually, they bring back to life the kid he killed. The kid he killed comes back in the form of an animal/something else to tell the townspeople how he died so they wouldn't blame the boy. Thanks for any help you guys can provide!
