message 201: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I've read 3 Gaiman books. The first one I read The Graveyard Book was awesome. Then I read Stardust, but for the first time ever, I thought the movie was better than the book. I still liked it though. Then I read Neverwhere, but that one didn't grab me. So my experience with Gaiman has been varied.

message 202: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments the alchemist is nr.97 on the 2008 Amazon list so it fits that goal. A new one will be coming shortly.

message 203: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments New goal: read a book that starts with the letter V. If words like A, An and The can be skipped, we can use Anita's A very accidentaly love story, but I need to check with the mods.

message 204: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I think it will work. If not I'm working on Vengeance in Death

message 205: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Ok. I sent them a question on the Captain gruppe, ask the mods link. you can check their answer there, Anita, just in case. I'm about to board a plane, so I won't be able to check for a couple of hours:-(

message 206: by Nidhi (new)

Nidhi Bhatt | 151 comments Have a safe trip Silje!

message 207: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Landed safely. We were allowed to use Anita's book for the goal. New goal: read a book where a character gets a makeover.

message 208: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments The new goal of a character that gets a makeover, I just finished Shadow and bone by Leigh Bardugo and the main character, Alina, gets a makeover near the beginning
(308 pages)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Shannon, great! then we'll use that one:-)

message 210: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments which character by the way, Shannon? I need the name:-)

message 211: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments sorry for all the writing mistakes, my phone is autocorrecting to Norwegian and it won't let me edit my comments:-P

message 212: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments New goal: read a book where a character's first name starts with Z....

message 213: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments The character is Alina.

Damn, that's bad luck. There was a character called Zoya which could of fit that goal

message 214: by Emily (new)

Emily Hmm... I don't have a book currently with a "Z" character, but I'm sure I could find one. I'm still working on the "X" book, though, and probably won't have that finished until tomorrow (my goal) or possibly Friday.

Do we know when exactly the round ends?

message 215: by Sunshine✰✰✰ (new)

Sunshine✰✰✰ | 313 comments I'm reading Hammered and it has a character named Zhang Guo Lao. I should have it finished late tomorrow

The Graveyard Book was the first ebook I ever bought and my first Neil Gaiman book too. I've also read American Gods and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I read them at face value but I can tell his writing is far over my head.

Gaiman is my favorite author, but I agree, his writing isn't for everyone. Sunshine - I'm sure it wasn't over your head... more like that your head isn't in the same place as his head. :) I think you definitely need to enjoy a certain type of quirkiness in your writing in order to enjoy his books.

Emily Sunshine wrote: "I'm reading Hammered and it has a character named Zhang Guo Lao. I should have it finished late tomorrow"

Is Zhang the first name or the last name in that case? (I'm sorry, Chinese names confuse me sometimes). The goal is for a first name, so I just want to make sure that it counts.

message 219: by Sunshine✰✰✰ (new)

Sunshine✰✰✰ | 313 comments First name

message 220: by Emily (new)

Emily Sunshine wrote: "First name"

Oh yay! Glad you have one that works. :)

Delta (sicname) Anita wrote: "I've read 3 Gaiman books. The first one I read The Graveyard Book was awesome. Then I read Stardust, but for the first time ever, I thought the movie was better than the book. I still liked it thou..."

I kind of feel the same way about the plots he writes. Some of his writing (I'm looking at you, American Gods) tends to drag on and on. But his world building is absolutely amazing.

The audiobook for Coraline is possibly my favorite audiobook I've listened to. Both creepy and funny, especially the rats singing. I listen to most of my books at 2x or 3x and there is nothing funnier than squeaky mice singing a creepy song at 3x speed.

message 226: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments I finished Inferno by Dan Brown, matches no goal, but it has 544 pages so it gives us a bit extra on the attack=)
I also started Strictly Temporary, which has a character named Zack. I will have it finished today or early Thursday.

message 227: by Emily (new)

Emily Silje wrote: "Boston Kate wrote: "Hmm... I don't have a book currently with a "Z" character, but I'm sure I could find one. I'm still working on the "X" book, though, and probably won't have that finished until ..."

Ahh, thank you. I figured the info had to be around here somewhere. :)

Looks like late Saturday night for me.

Just want to make sure I plan out my books so that everything is finished before the next round starts.

message 228: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Now that we are getting closer to the end of the round I'm reminding everyone to remember to put all the books you read for this challenge in your gladiator shelf and to put a read date on them. That way it will be much less work for me and Anita. If the books are not in the shelves or don't have a date that fits the timespace, we can not use them.

message 229: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) Finished Renegade Man, 253 pages. It doesn't fit any challenges.

Are there any challenges that are not being read for already?

message 230: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Think all challenges are being read for at the moment.

message 231: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Strictly Temporary finished. Fits the Z-goal.

message 232: by Silje (last edited Aug 13, 2015 01:30AM) (new)

message 233: by Anita Reads (last edited Aug 13, 2015 01:32AM) (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments Awesome. I'm close to finishing A Rush of Wings, which will also work for a goal. Will probably finish it when I get home from work later.

message 234: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Great Anita!
New goal Read a book first published on the 7th of a month
I'm a bit busy right now, but I can start check through the books we already have read when I get back, unless anyone already know a book that fits.

message 235: by Nidhi (last edited Aug 13, 2015 02:51AM) (new)

Nidhi Bhatt | 151 comments None of my books are published on 7th.

message 236: by Emily (new)

Emily I don't have anything quick. I'm sure I could find something, but nothing that I can read in a day. :(

message 237: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I'll look when I get home from work. Only 20 minutes to go. Wait why am I online? I needed a 5 minute break :)

message 238: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) I finished Bullied Kids Speak Out: We Survived--How You Can Too, 206 pages. Doesn't fit any challenges.

I double-checked my books, but none were published on the 7th.

message 239: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) I found Torn, published May 7th. I can start it in a few hours when I finish the book I'm working on.

message 240: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Ok, Delta:-) if not I found a book as well but it is second in a series I haven't started reading, so I would have to read the first one first...

message 241: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) No problem. Already started it.

Finished Midnight Riders, 434 pages. Doesn't fit any challenges.

message 242: by Delta (new)

message 243: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Wow Delta, you're on fire today!=)

message 244: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Ugh, there's a problem, turns out we can't use Torn after all. The goal ask for first published and Torn was first published the 24th of January 2012..=(

message 245: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) Ugh, lame.

message 246: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I finsihed A Rush of Wings works for goal weapon on cover.

and

Wait for You which doesn't work for a goal.

message 247: by Anita Reads (last edited Aug 14, 2015 12:31AM) (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I can't find a book that's published the 7th of a month.
I'll keep digging.

New goal: Read a book whose author died this year

I know Terry Pratchett passed earlier this year, and I recently started his series Discworld. I'll try and listen to one of his books before the deadline, but if someone else has a book that works. Please don't hesitate to read it, as it wasn't really one of my planned books this month.

message 248: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments I have the 7th covered, will finish today I think. Happenstance 2 is first published sept 7th 2014.
