Just finished chapter 3, and I have to say if this goes the way of The Grisha Trilogy, I will swoon my face off. #TeamDarkling
I'm barely, barely started, but the parenthesis saying "this is not a digression" is giving me pause.
Getting really into this ... full disclosure, I'm on chapter 11. I could do without the "later I would realize" and "let me go back and tell you something that happened 3 days ago" narrative style. But I feel like that would pay off on re-reads. Regardless, I'm getting #TeamDarkling feels. Even though Darkling means something TOTALLY different in these books.
I finished the book in the wee hours of the morning while feeding my baby and I think I liked it. I'll definitely read the next one so that's a good sign. I agree with Beth that the back and forth between past and present would be better on a reread.

SPOILERS below: In general, I liked the ending, but felt like there were a few plot lines that were left hanging a bit. While I liked that there was resolution, I felt like it was maybe a bit too neatly tied up. Like the author just decided in the last 2 chapters to end it and make it all work out, regardless of whether it made sense or not. I also was hoping for a little more with the Yeine/Naha relationship - more build up to it and more payoff with it. I was really looking forward to more of their relationships in future books, but talking to Lindsay, it sounds like the next books follow different characters, which is bummer.
Also, similar to Heidi and Beth, the back and forth dialogue will be less confusing on a re-read. There was a lot of detail and back story that got confusing, so I'm thinking I would probably pick up quite a bit more on the reread.
I finished this today, and I am looking forward to reviewing it. But IDK, fantasy (and high fantasy) is my favorite genre so it should be sparking intense feelings in me, and it isn't. I'm a millpond instead of a tempest. Review to come on the website at the end of the month.

I also thought the last two chapters were rushed a bit - I wanted more Naha/Yeine story. Like Beth said - #darklinglove!
That said, I actually really liked this book, and I'm moving on to the next one. I'm sad though if it doesn't go on with Naha and Yeine - I didn't even read the intro to it before I purchased. Jeez.
I finished the whole series and in retrospect the first book barely fits with the other two. I mean, I read three books so must have liked them enough, but something was off.
I'm on chapter 9 of the second book and enjoying its narrative much more. Maybe it's because we aren't totally in the dark, learning the world from scratch. I also like this heroine. But I do wish I knew more of Naha and Yeine in this book. It reminds me of reading Iced in the Fever series, happy to be in the world but desperately missing Barrons and Mac. Except not that strong a feeling bc Naha and Yeine are no Barrons and Mac.

SPOILERS- I agree that the ending was too neat. It felt like Yiene just went around in a circle handing out stuff, like the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz. "and you get a heart and you get brain and you get new a new hip and you get to be ruler..." Did anyone else want to see Yiene and Naha get it on now that they're equals?
Danelle, the whole series is just missing something for me. I feel like we are only getting 3/4 of the story. I would have preferred if the Yeine/Naha story continued as the focus.

Sheeeeeit. This sounds good. If you need to discuss once you've finished, please use the spoiler tag. If you have a specific question but are worried about being spoiled, start a new discussion in this folder. HAVE FUN GUYS.
