Yes, you can definitely make a character who arrived before the characters on the claim list!

Yup! The history of before they came to Aster should be included in the history, even though the character won't remember it.

Analeese said for me to ask my question here.
Here's the issue. I'm moderator of 5-6 reading groups elsewhere in the Goodreads groups sections, all of them under 'Literature & Fiction'. All of them are 'tagged' as either mystery, thriller, suspense, action, etc etc etc.
Lately I've become interested in how groups are 'tagged' because it determines how quickly people can find them in these 'list pages of groups'.
What I'm trying to do is attract more members to my groups and thus, keep reader-activity in these genres high. I hate to see them languish.
Anyway so I started checking to see if my groups were tagged correctly. For instance, if someone searches on 'suspense' I'd like them to see a good, solid list of the top 'suspense' groups on Goodreads. Not just my two groups, but all the other really serious suspense groups. I think this makes a good impression.
But I started noticing that 'Touch of Magic'--which has 9 members--and is about magic and role-play--for some reason, appears at the top of a lot of *unrelated* genre/group pages. Another group that appears everywhere is called 'Christian Fiction' (or something), and I've contacted them to to inquire about that, too.
What I wonder in a case like this (and I hope you won't take it amiss) is, can I ask whether you have your group 'tagged' correctly? Would you mind looking at the tags to see whether they are the right kind?
And my second question is this: your group promo-photos. Not the masthead, but the photos you've placed in your 'group settings' section. I think they are a pair of animated gifs, right? The reason I ask is that eveyrwhere your group is listed on Goodreads, these two rather large images immediately leap up and consume a lot of space on the page. This is because Goodreads looks at the first couple lines of text in 'Group Settings' and displays that as 'group info'.
I use pictures too but I recently realized that putting the html img code first, makes the picture 'repeat' all over the Goodreads site! So what I do now is put my actual group description first and then --a few farther lines down--then I add the img code. If I didn't, my pictures would crowd all the other group listings off the genre pages and list pages where groups are browsed for. Does that make sense? Its an issue of doing-the-right-thing-for-neighboring-groups. Not taking up so much space that other groups are eclipsed or shoved-aside.
It's an easy thing to overlook--I know because I've done it myself.
So this--in combination with my question about tags--is what I wanted to bring to your attention and see whether you would look into it? Again, I'm not criticizing but just trying to make things better for everyone. 'Good neighbor' policy, as it were.
Hope you don't mind me speaking up and I'm happy to clarify anything I've tried to describe, above. Also, I'd try to do you all a favor sometime if you do me one in these matters. Perhaps a little cross-promotion or something, or maybe whip you up something magickal for your page.
Thanks for hearing me out!
Feliks

Would you mind giving me an example of a search, where I can see this myself? I'll try to clear things up, if I can.
Thanks!
Ella

Anyway here's two quick places to search for groups and see how the lists are populated. You can see, all sorts of oddities. Search for 'suspense' and a 'history book club' pops up first.
This is what I had noticed last night with 'Touch of Magic'. But I look at your tags and they're all okay. So it wasn't anything to do with y'all. I withdraw my inquiry in this area!
You can still see, though--from searches in this section--just what effect 'very large group photos' has--

I just meant for something I could search up that will show what you mean, like for the image thing.

Compared to that, your two animated GIFS are not so bad. Anyway, remember that I started to contact you before I realized that Goodreads takes overnight to adjust its tags. So the issue is not as dire.
I'll be taking my leave from this magickal kingdom soon now that you've heard me out. It was really a small matter after all, like I said.
And here's my gift to you:
Since you all are into the 'island' theme, check out an old radio program from 1935 called 'Magic Island'. Its a free series available from the Internet Archive. Really a lot of fun. 130 episodes. Available here as mp3 downloads: https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Magi...\
Its so ingenious and creative that it was even an influence on the tv show 'Lost'. Here's some info:

Thanks for your help Feliks, we really appreciate it! :) And I'll definitely check out that Magic Island radio program.

What do you mean by that?
