He travails with his parents, who have come for the reading of his uncles will or something. They stay in a inn connected to a pub. A distant relative comes and tries to make him read from an old book. The boy refuses and is stuck in one of many worlds written by his ancestors. The rich are the writers Friends who can not die of old age because they are the first generation. The rule over the mortal working class. The boy joins a group of child pickpockets and theifs, led by a girl called Betsy or something. A man who knows some magic keeps showing up, and seems to know who the boy is and has some connection with betsy. The book ends with a bit of a cliff hanger. Betsy and the boy have escaped the book world only to land in another.
