Ezzie ran. She always ran. Rain poured down around her. Thunder was her thunder, lightening was her flashlight. She was sopping wet, but she didn't care. There were people inside her home. Many many people inside her home. None were friends. This wasn't her party. They didn't know she was here. No one ever knew that these woods were a girl's home. And she liked it that way. But stormy nights were meant to be free of people. Stormy nights were meant to be a time to hunt without fear of other people. People weren't to be trusted. People had ran her out of her first home. People had left her here. People were cannibals, killing others just for personal gain. Sick creatures other people were. Like snakes. Venomous and will do anything it takes to have the upper hand. This was why she ran until she found a spot to hide and watch them go by, careful not to hurt upcoming worms as she knelt. If she was a friend to the woods, they would be a friend to her and she needed that to survive.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments The rain came down on his shoulders they were on the move again. Joseph hated running and going from place to place. He didn't like how everybody treated him wrongly. He wasn't paying attention to where they were. The rain made it hard for him and the others to see. He came to a log on the pathway. He didn't realize it was there until he tripped over and twisted his leg. He landed on the ground with a hard thud. The others saw him. They were trying to see if he was worth taking with him. "We shouldn't take him. He will just slow us down." They nodded in agreement with the captain. They left him. He couldn't stand the pain. He soon fell unconscious on the cold hard wet ground.

Ezzie glared at the cruel people. Abandoning one because of it's weakness when they weren't in any danger. She whispered, "May the forest judge you rightly." It was the blessing she gave every passer and reasoned that was the reason few people other than her made it, because their hearts didn't have the compassion the forest required. She tentatively stepped towards the young fallen one. He was like her in age but she knew that beyond that they had nothing in common. He had grown to become like the others. She had grown to know the forest. The wind howled and as if it was speaking to her, she nodded, bending down to carry him to her shelter. It was a one room small hut with no decor. He had her bed and supplies inside and that was it. She quickly reset his broken leg, attached a split, dressed the wound and lay him on the little floor space below her bed where she sat staring down at him.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He laid there wondering what happened. His head hurt extremely bad. It ache. His leg hurt bad to. His eyes started to fluttered. He looked around to where he was. He notice a girl staring at him. The light hurt his eyes. He closed them tightly again. The darkness overwhelmed him. It made feel comfort. The light made everything seem worse. What had happen? He remember falling and then them leaving him. He was in hut. How did he get here and who was this girl? It was kinda of creepy for her to be staring at him. He thought. He winced at the pain from his head.

Ezzie had noticed his eyes open and demanded in an authoritative voice, knowing a man was more likely to listen that way, "What call you?" Her English wasn't the greatest because this had been her first time speaking to someone in years but her voice had been used a lot so it didn't sound scratchy. She had used it to sing with birds and apologize to animals for their sacrifice to allow her to live. It was obvious that she wasted nothing. Her clothes and blankets were all and skins, the bones used for weapons and for her few dishes. She stared at him, distrusting him. She would not leave him conscious and alone with her things, but needed to hunt. She needed food to feed them both. She would wait for him to sleep again.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "They call me Joseph." He winced at the pain again. He couldn't take this pain."Why does my head hurt?" He asked in a whisper. It hurt him to talk or move. He had his eyes closed tightly still. He felt dry. His leg hurt but not as much as his legs. He wanted us answers. He was to weak to ask any questions. He didn't want to be a bother. He should say thank you. He couldn't speak. He was helpless. The pain consumed him. He flinched at the pain. "It hurts." He said faintly.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

"You clumsy and hit dead tree. Your bones not used to fall and break. Of course 'it hurts.'" She said and went to a cupboard. She pulled out some lightly colored leaves attached to a small purple bud. She plucked off the flower and handed it to him, "Eat. Will make hurt less." She forced it into his hand and quickly backed away again, studying him. He was tall and obviously smart, but she was stronger and in these woods she was most likely smarter. She blew gently on the fire, coaxing it to keep burning and keeping the hut warm. She noticed he still hadn't eaten the bud so she said more forcefully, "Eat!"

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "Please don't yell." He winced at the pain. He felt the bud and brought to his mouth. The pain consumed him again. He put the bud in his mouth. He chewed slowly. He forcefully pushed the bud down his throat. "My head hurts." He whispered again. He felt like he was spinning when he opened his eyes. It hurt him to speak. He couldn't close his eyes. The pain came back. He wanted to scream. He held it in though.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

She rolled her eyes having gone through worse, "Fall out of tree onto bear and tell me that. Sleep." Ezzie needed to go hunt. She watched him studiously, wondering if he'd explain why he was here.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He nodded. He closed his eyes. He soon drifted into a sleep. He didn't know how he got here. He didn't care right now. The pain came back again. He laid there in his dream paralyzed with pain. He was in a dream. He couldn't dream now.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Ezzie locked the door before going out and hunting. She killed one buck, apologized to Mother Nature before bring it back and beginning to skin it and cook the meat.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments It was nightmare. The one when his mom died in the house fire. He came home to the house in flames. He cried. He started to scream. "No." Tears came down his face. The screaming didn't help the pain that ran through him.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

She let him scream. For her, it was better than him being awake.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "Please make it stop." He begged. He screamed over and over again. He needed this to stop. The pain was all over him. He felt himself slipping away into the darkness.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

She woke him up and said, "Be quiet. You disturb fire." She went over and turned the meat before continuing to sharpen bones into arrows. The ribs of a deer were strong, light, and slender. They made perfect arrows but she went through them quickly.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He opened his eyes. He closed them back again. The light hurt his eyes. He didn't say anything. He felt like as trespasser. "I will be leaving soon." He whispered.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

She said, "Good. May the forest judge you rightly as you leave." She forced a stick with venison on it in his face, "Eat." She moved away once again and continued working and eating, drying meat strips along the ceiling to make it last longer.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He sat up slowly."Ok." He took the meat. He nibbled it. The world started to spin. He fell over. He felt weak. His eyes closed. The pain made it hard for him to breathe. He started to slow down on his breaths.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

She worked quickly and easily. She had long healed battle scars on her arms and it was abvious that she wouldn't have much sympathy for him.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He drifted away. He hope he wouldn't go in coma. That was his worst fear. He couldn't hear anything.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

(hm...what should happen from here?)

She swapped his bandages.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments ((Um maybe he wakes up and leaves then on the way he left halfway through he collapses and slips into coma?))

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

(idk. he only tripped, it couldn't have been THAT bad...))

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments ((True. Um maybe a wild animal comes after him as he leaves.))

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

((hm...idk...i want som frisson before we get intobthat stuff. He needs to be a wake more mahbe ask her stuff. Create some getting to know eachvother to lead into chem?))

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments ((Kk that is good idea))

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

((u start?))

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments ((Ok))

He woke up. He remember everything that happened."Where am I? How did I get here?" This girl here helped him or someone helped her that helped him. He looked around his new eniviorment.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

"Shelter in my woods. You fall. Your herd leave so I take in." She had made jerky and gave him a single piece as his breakfast, "Eat." She retreated to the other side of the room and watched him. He was good looking but he was a human. They were traitors to the hand that fed them and she wouldn't trust one.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "Why do you say your woods these are the governments?" He said as he ate the jerky. He was curious. Her English was broken. She was a sweet person or at least he thought so.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

She blinked at the foreign word and it was mucked up when she repeated it back, "Givanint's? What is this? These woods are mine and you people are not welcome."

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "They are people who run the country." He look up."There are certain types of government. Levels or branches. Each has a particular order or duty they to complete to stay in office."

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

She blinked, very confused, "Country? I know of no thing. These woods, my home." She glared at him challengingly, "The woods chose me to protect not Country of Givanints."

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "The government protects these wood from people to destroy it. These are off limits government officials are allowed in here." He shook his head."You don't know what I'm talking about do you?"

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

"No. Woods don't like people. People worse than snakes and hurt her. That why she hurt people. We know no Givanints." She ate her jerky from the far side of the room. She looked out the window, "First snow come at night."

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He wanted to explain to her,but he was afraid of causing some type of trouble. He just sat there quite for a few seconds. "Thank you for helping me out." He looked up and gave her a faint smile.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

"Just because snake has poison doesn't mean it need die," she answered simply sewing some clothes from a deer skin.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He didn't know if should take that as a insult or what. He felt that she didn't like him. He couldn't explain anything to her because he didn't want to upset her."What is your name if you don't mind me asking?"

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

"I think I am called Ezzie, but has been long time since I have been known by my human name," she began to wash her newly sewn dress.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "Essie that's a pretty name." He looked at her how long has she been here in the woods."How long have you lived here?"

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

"From five years young I think," she said, "Mother and father tried to hide me from bad people. Then they left with people. I no trust. People leave own young to die in woods. Worse than snake."

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments He tired remember something from then. It was that attack by bad people. He knew bits and pieces."I'm sorry. I remember that attack that is how my father died. There were bad people who came from far places trying to take over our government."
